Lucas Style Door Mirror: Extension Options 444-544

I've got a set of Lucas-style door mirrors on my 544 and as most of you know, these cars have a nasty blindspot on the passenger side. Has anyone had any luck with any products that I might tack onto these mirrors for highway trips to give some better visibility?

Thanks

Looks like these:

Lucas Style Door Mirror: Extension Options 444-544

I have the mirrors that are shaped sort of like a tear drop that came on the P1800`s and maybe some of the 120`s. The part numbers are 681682 and 1213604. You are completely right about the blind spot. I almost pulled right into the side of someone the other day. I tried to find some spot mirrors to put on them but all I could find were the large black plastic frame spot mirrors that looked way out of place. I found some old style round spot mirrors that are the aluminum backed low profile at Carquest. I put a large one on the passenger side and a smaller one on the drivers side. No more blind spot and easy to see most especially with the large one on the passenger side. If it were me I would change the passenger side to the largest round spot mirror I could find. Carquest had three different sizes. The largest one that they sold would fit nice on that mirror. The larger the spot the larger the image. I was glad to be able to use those mirrors because I had new glass installed in them. The original round mirrors you have look great too on the 544. Hope this helps. Larry

My own solution for mirrors was to install round spot units that clamped to the leading edge of the door window frame (a real 1950's solution) on the '65 544 I drove for a couple of years.
The first time I ever drove in a track event (with my '69 144S in 1997) I learned something that has always stuck. The fellow (an experienced racer) conducting the drivers meeting spent a fair amount of time talking about mirrors. People are naturally prone to adjust mirrors so that the flank of the car is visible - confidence arising from the established point of reference. This is what makes for "blind spots". Both side mirrors should be adjusted outward enough so that you must lean over a bit to see the flanks. What happens is -- as a vehicle approaches from behind and passes on the right or left it leaves view from the interior rear view mirror - but with the sideview mirrors adjusted outward the passing vehicle will appear in view just as it leaves the interior mirror. It works. -- Dave

Great advise, Dave. I too have been adjusting my mirrors that way for years but it is amazing how many people do not.
For the passenger side , you should have to lean over to the center of the car to see the rear quarter of your car, and for driver's side, your head should be against the side window.
It really does work! Tom
