I have not had a pump failure in 740s or 240s - at well over 200K.
However, I have had two hard pipe failures one on a '90 740 at 225K and one on a '92 240 at 200K.
On the 740, which might be quite like your 900 - the pipes cross over, and evidently were touching each other - one sprung a leak at the crossover, and right after I replaced the leaking pipe, the other went as well. Although these were pinholes, the fluid blasted out in seconds!
In the 240, the pipe rusted and swelled and had a drip leak - In a month or so, it was empty.
As for maintenance - examine the hard pipes, especially where they cross over - if they touch, split a piece of small hose and slip it into the contact point. Examine the hoses as well - link for signs of leaks and swelling in the hoses.
If the pipes leak or look bad, they can be replaced - BE CAREFUL - the fitting threads are extra fine and the fitting threads are harder than the rack's - if you strip them, you will need a new rack as repair parts are not available.
Make sure you get new O rings, and that the old ones are removed as the flare is a bubble flare with an O ring.
If the fluid is black or dark, replace it - some hang a magnet in the reservoir to catch (and observe) for particles.
