Mechanic says I need a left front ball joint... 700 1990

Jack it up, put a jack stand under it, grab the top and bottom of the tire and alternately pull on the top and bottom and see if there is any looseness. If there is any looseness, you may be able to push and pull on the bottom of the tire while under the car to see where the looseness is. Make sure it is supported by a jack stand if you get under the car.
