Next!! 940 no start/intermittent start/cold or hot 900

Still trying to straighten out my 142 and my Boy's 94 940 keeps giving me trouble. Go to start, hot or cold, no rhyme or reason, either won't start or really rough idle. Replaced crank sensor, Ok for a while, then no start. Would not start at all. Replaced fuel pump relay, fine for a while, then start for a couple seconds, then stall. Won't restart. Ran codes, A2, generated code 1-2-2/solenoid S-1 open circuit?? Some kind of sensor issue? what am I looking for? Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Dear bynks@hotmail.com,

Hope you're well. Code 1-2-2 on Port A2 (fuel injection) means the IAT (intake air temperature sensor) signal is absent or faulty. If so, this car uses Rex/Regina engine/fuel management. The IAT sensor is mounted in the cylindrical unit between the air box and the corrugated rubber hose, that takes air to the throttle body.

The sensor's two-pin wiring harness connector housing is bright blue and the sensor's body is made of black plastic, with a series of small round holes on either side. This item is part #1389556. The cost is about $65.

Before replacing this sensor, use an aerosol corrosion-remover, e.g., Deoxit to clean the sensor's pins and the wiring harness connector contacts. If cleaning does not restore smooth operation, the sensor may be defective.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Hello,
Finally got down to it yesterday. When I separated the connector, it was full of oil. I sprayed it with CRC Lectra-Motive, scrubbed out with a toothbrush, let it dry and.... So far so good! Ran rough at first, took it for a spin down 309 and it is running much smoother, and starting easily. Thank you so much for your help!

Dear bynks@hotmail.com,

Hope you're well. You're welcome. I'd try to figure out why the connector was "filled with oil". That's not normal.

Check the corrugated rubber air intake hose, that connects the IAT sensor housing with the throttle body. If the hose is filled with oil: (a) clean it (use laundry detergent to emulsify the oil and (b) clean the throttle body

Nest, check the flame trap, and if it clogged, clean it to help ensure that oil vapors are pulled down towards the oil pan.

If the air intake hose is oil-free, perhaps someone used oil as a "water-proofer". This is not a good idea. There are dielectric greases that will exclude moisture from electrical connectors, without interfering with the flow of electrons.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Spook,
At some point, the car was drastically overfilled with oil. Could this have something to do with it? The plug really looked like it was filled with oil. I checked the air filter and it looked good, and nothing else seemed to be wet with oil. It's my son's car and so far it is starting and running fine. Just like the 2 times before, when it lulled us into a false sense of security and I wind up taking the 78 wagon out to pick him up from work at 9:15 on a Sunday night. Here's hoping :)

Spook, thanks for your reply, I picked up CRC Lectra-Motive. It Says it is an electric parts cleaner. I should be able to get out there on Sunday and finally try to get this straightened out. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks so much for your help. I appreciate your taking the time. Bynks
