I have a couple ??? Regarding an alternator upgrade on my 1986 240.

I FINALLY got fed up with the remanned alts after exchanging TWO Bosch types due to misclocking of the rear half(terminal locations) got a refund and bought a
Nippondenso 80 amp alt from the Ol fleabay.
Bolted in perfectly with two exceptions.
One is the stock adjusting bracket seems to be a tad short leaving the belts quite loose. How would I remedy this situation? Is the bushing in the block simply bad? I know the adjuster is loose per say on the engine side but the Bosch doesn't have issues with this.

Two:
What's the best way to extend the b+ cable is say about 6" if that. It does fit as is but seems like I'd have to cut the protective sheath covering the wires to get the OP wire back on.

Any suggestions especially regarding the bracket will be greatly appreciated as I'm at wits end with the thing.

They are supposedly drop in upgrades. What am I missing here???

Do you mean BOSCH re-manufactured, or the AutoZone, O'Reilly, Schuck's garbage?

Have folks had problems with "re-manufactured by Bosch" Bosch alternators. I hope not.

I've used "re-manufactured by Bosch" Bosch alternators and have had no problems. One new, and two newly installed used pulled from the junkyard.

Not sure on the alternators but I and others have reported their remanufactured starters as no better than the pray-and-spray rebuilders for the chain stores. I eventually went used, known good.

I would like to hear about this conversion also, I picked one up at the JY a few years ago but never installed it.

Sorry it has been so long before I responded but I want to bring my final verdict.

I did get the ND alt to bolt in perfectly as well as the connections( all just dropped in) the alternator was a promised good unit but it was deader than a doornail and I ended up pushing the vehicle home.(died a few feet from driveway but was only outputting 9 volts before totally dying) guess no more dealings with that seller. Anyways.....I just went with another Bosch 80 amp all that happened to be staring me in the face all along( in parts car which is still at previous.owners place) no issues.but I wanted to let folks know that had it not been for the bad regulator on the ND it would have worked perfectly minus the belts being just a tad loose.

Ok, still befuddled. What car does it come off...this drop in upgrade ND alternator?

Are you implying that the spade connector and ring connector are identical to the Bosch alternator and there is also a convenient stud for the alternator ground wire?

The ears on the alternator are identical to accept the turnbuckle and pivot of the B203F set-up?

As more that two decade plus posters have said, we are unaware of this being a drop in because we do not know from whence it comes!

Yes it bolted up no problems, the spade(d+) as well as the B+ terminal were the same size and required no modifying. I had to redo my b+ terminal because it was bad previous to my ND upgrade attempt with a lawnmower start terminal but the hole diameter is the same or close.

The alt. Was from a 1991 740 with a b230f engine and nippondenso alternator. I know for a FACT that the bosh is interchangeable between the 2 and 7 series. The 100 amp Bosch with the black plastic cover may be tight in the 240 due to clearance but all fit.

That's why I tried. And like I mentioned before swedespeed or it could have been turbobricks all mention the ND 100 amp as an upgrade. The 80a is similar just a bit smaller. May need new adjuster if doing the swap.

But it did work again minus the fact that the alt was DOA.

Interesting. My 1990 760 turbo had an ND alternator but I never considered it an upgrade. I have found most Bosch alternators to be extremely durable and reliable...in many cases the only reliable items in a Chrysler product of a certain era. Granted, Nipon Denso has has made long life, but mostly disposable, alternators in Japanese cars and motorcycles for decades.

Good factoid to squirrel away should the slip rings on my Bosch ever wear out. Granted, my current Bosch only has 175K miles on it so should be good for another 10 years at my 5K miles a year I put on it.

Agreed!!!! The Bosch units literally last forever. The ND units are MUCH MUCH more inexpensive to rebuild when they do fail that's one reason behind the upgrade. The others being smaller, lighter and most importantly high output at low rpm. The Bosch alts are "lazy" when it comes to output at low rpms(idle) atleast when dealing with the old silver aluminum n-1 styles. Alot of Chrysler's also use Nippondenso as did my 1994 shadow p body did. Remember that the Germans instead of a merger of equals did a "Nazi takeover" figuritively speaking re Chrysler Corp.
But mopar used Alot of Bosch still does. It's a very good and tried true brand. Even my old 1998 Kia had Bosch ignition parts. Lol.

Not sure what you are missing. Can you be more specific about who tells you it is supposedly a "drop in upgrade?" Maybe they have some comment. Perhaps on another forum?

Generally, DIY car fixers are far too ambivalent about the mechanical aspects of electrical wiring where it encounters vibration, heat, and oil. Geoff, it sounds like you understand this challenge better than most.

Hint: You might try re-posting in the 200 forum. Not choosing a model/year gets you the smallest audience here, which might seem at odds with intuition.

Doing the ND swap is a very big and heavily covered topic. I just cannot find any information other than it should bolt and wire up perfectly without modifications.

The GM 140 amp retrofit apparently does need some mods as well as wiring upgrades.

Turbobricks is where I got my information from and Dave Barton apparently has also done it. I think he's a member on blackboard as well was hoping he might chime in.


I am going to attempt replacing the block bushing for the upper adjuster bracket and see if that helps otherwise I may just need to have the bracket extended.
