Fuel gauge 900 1992

When I fill the tank the fuel gauge goes about 1/4 inch past the rightmost position. Is this adjustable?

    Dear Robbie,

Hope you're well. Fuel gauges are not adjustable, so far as I know. Few fuel gauge failures have been reported on this Board. Most fuel gauge issues turn-out to be related to: (a) the in-tank send unit; (b) the wires that connect the send unit to the gauge; (c) the instrument cluster's circuit "card" or ground.

Answers to some questions may promote diagnosis. Does the gauge indicator needle go "far right":
    (a) as soon as you start to fill the tank?
    (b) only after the tank has been filled "half-way" (six to eight gallons)?
    (c) only after the tank has been filled completely?
    (d) and then move slowly to the left, as fuel is used?
    (e) and stay there, until the tank is half-empty (or less)?

Did this "far right" movement start after replacement of the in-tank fuel pump and/or the fuel gauge send unit?

    Please post your replies.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Needle on the gas gauge goes "far right" once i fill the tank with gas.
It gets there gradually. It even moves for 5 minutes after I'm done, and start driving. It stabilizes at roughly 1/4 inch past the rightmost gauge marker.
Then for days after I drive it will start dropping to the left.
I guess I just have to add 1/4 inch mentally to the current display to get an accurate reading. Not a big deal, just a nuisance. My odometer stopped working years ago, so I need reliable gas gauge.

        Dear Robbie,

Hope you're well. What you need is a replacement instrument cluster. Be advised: clusters from later 940s (i.e., 1993 and later) will fit into the opening but will not work properly. So far as I know, only clusters from 1991 and 1992 models will fit and work properly. You can have the speedo calibrated and the odometer re-set by an automotive instrument technician.

As to the in-tank send unit, you might try the following. Get a container of fuel system (not fuel injector) cleaner. When the tank is 1/4 full (or 3/4 empty) pour in the entire bottle and fill with gas. If possible, let this mixture sit for a few days. The solvents in the fuel system cleaner may dissolve some of the waxes that have accumulated on the wire-wound rods and the float, inside the fuel sender's barrel. I suspect that these waxy deposits account for some of the reported malfunctions.

Fuel system cleaner isn't costly. If it works, you are spared the task of replacing the in-tank send unti. This task is unpleasant, especially in a sedan, as access is via an opening in the trunk's floor.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

Consider yourself lucky that it at least gives you a clue that you have gas in it. My 1993 940T gas gauge hasn't worked in ten years. It is maddening. I have tried multiple things, including the repair recommended on the front page of TB. Still doesn't work. I gave up. I just top it off, and keep a log of how many miles driven.

Hopefully your odometer works so you can see how many miles you've driven.
Mine died years ago. Most of my dash gauges no longer work. Had the dash out few times looking for trouble spots. Not much luck. I also checked various ground connections.

Try resoldering the back of the gauges. It should fix all the idiot lights and gauges except the fuel sender problem.
