Is this a good deal? 700 1990

Hi Everyone!
New here. My name is Joe and I'm from NJ. My first car back in 2007 was a 1995 850 T-5 Sedan which I loved and was a lot of fun. Now, I'm looking for another a real RWD brick and I've found one which looks promising. It's a 1990 740 Turbo-Intercooled estate with 119,xxx verified miles. It was a Cali car and has no rust anywhere. It's fully decked out, aside from full leather seats. It just had the following stuff replaced:

Timing belt and water pump
Brakes, caliper and rotors all around
Fuel pump, filter and injectors
Battery
Tires (but crappy Westlake ones)
Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter

Would you think it is a good deal at $5100?

Thanks.
Joe

    Is this a good deal? 700 1990

At that price it better well nigh be perfect. At less than 120k, it probably is.

Surely it has some good history, hopefully records and a good Carfax. No wrecks should be a must.

I just bought a '90 740 GLE less than $2400, with 148k. Carfax had revealed two prior owners, both in Nashville. The primary servicer there had tons of records... very well cared for car ...perfect body and paint... no wrecks. Very good interior. Best driving rwd I have ever owned.

Even though it was well cared for, I have realized that the physical age of the car has to catch up at some point. I have an oil leak, possible valve stem seals leaking (probably due to sedate city driving) and have a few other things that need addressing. Relays have been an issue, the air conditioner relay having to be re-soldered as one example.

One thing that surprised me was the high class shop in Nashville botching an obvious thing. When I had my mechanic trace down the reason the air was not working.. he found the relay that needed help, but he also found the system was overcharged by 2 lbs. of Freon. He commented that he was amazed it had not blown seals in the compressor.

Observation on two shops... Franklin Automotive in Birmingham and Import Speciality Service in Nashville. I know Franklin was all Volvo years back and pretty sure the Nashville shop was the same. As RWD Volvos have declined, these shops (and probably others) have branched out to newer Volvo and Lexus cars.

That is well and good, but I see techs today depending more and more on what a reading through what a machine tells them, and are not as familiar with the older bricks. My personal experience was taking my '92 245 to Franklin, and they did not have a clue how to fix it.

Sorry I went a bit long. Hope it helps you make a good decision.

Oh, I do wish I had found a pretty much perfect B230 Turbo, rather than the B234 16v. The motor is great anyway ...just have to be careful with the timing belt. 😊

Carfax is clean. Records show one owner from CA from 1990 to 2013. The Westlake tires are a concern.
      The dash perfect

There is a shop nearby called the VoVo Clinic, though

This is the listing. If I bought it directly from the company, I would pay $400 less

I thought mine was clean, but that one is almost perfect.

Actually, mine is very similar. Things like the map pockets behind the front seats not being stretched out. Probably means it was not abused by kids.

Mine has just not had the thorough cleaning under the hood, even under the car that one has had.

The only thing I see is that the rear muffler has a small area of concern, and will have to be replaced some time in the future. Still.. keep in mind age will and has taken it's toll. Other things will show up.

Outside of that, the reason they are asking the $$ is the amount of details that have been addressed, such as new parking light modules all about ...all that plus it is just an excellent specimen.

Only you can decide if you want to spend the amount. I think it is a bit high, but then I am always looking for a bargain.

        I wish you well.

      PS 700 1990

I might add the things they have done to the car are minimal, and the crappy tires may be an indication of cutting corners.
Make sure the underside is not covered extensively in oil, especially fresh oil. Anyone can do a good clean on an engine bay.
One indicator might be the dash. Mine is almost perfect.. no cracks. Makes me know the car was garage kept mostly.

      I wish you well.
