Running rich 700 1991

My daughter has a 91 745 turbo, no it has not been cared for as it should. I towed it to my place in Florida to try to get it going again, this car has been in our family for 10 years now. The car runs but will barley idle and is running really rich. You can smell gas in the exhaust strong. I am going to do the needed maintenance, oil change filters etc. Any advise where to start on the idle / running rich issue would be appreciated.

First thing I would check with a Rich condition is the Fuel Pump Regulator.
The small hose on the front of the regulator runs to the Intake Manifold. When the internal diaphragm fails, Unregulated, raw gas runs threw that small hose and into the Intake.

So Run the car a bit then pull off the small hose and see that it's dry. A simple and free check. I wouldn't tune it up until you find the Rich issue.. don't want to foul new plugs.

Question: Has the car sat for long time and when trying to use it again, found these issues...or has this car been used and these issued emerged? I guess I'm wondering if a car that sat a while, with Ethanol gas, has 'beat up' the Injector spray pattern.

Car has not sat long,2 to 3 weeks. And my daughter uses ethanol free gasoline...
I Found the mass air flow was the main problem. Will check the fuel pressure regulator next time I have a chance. At least it will run and idle (very low) now!!

Could the low idle be due to a dirty throttle body?

After some much needed maintenance she is running much better. Doing brakes and shocks / struts now. Believe the old girl is ready for another 100,000 miles.
Thanks to all.

You have Bosch engine control with OBD.

So check the codes before throwing parts at it.

Though some of the descriptions for fault codes are misleading. Do you own a repair or service manual?

All of the following FAQ articles deal with rich running conditions symptoms and a probable corresponding cause.

Give it a tune- up. Change the O2sensor. Pull the hose to your fuel pressure regulator and check for gasoline in the line ./ shouldn't be any. Replace the NTC Sensor ( Engine Temp ) how old is the fuel filter and air filter. Run a bottle of "Thecron" fuel system cleaner in 1/2 tank gasoline..
