Cruise control trouble shoot. 200 1993

I have never “serviced” a cruise control system so I'm accepting all advice and pointers.
The cruise control on my '93 245 automatic will work, but only for between 5 and, say, 50 seconds. This tells me that the electrical side of things is good and the vacuum side of things is somehow defective. I checked all the vacuum hose connections I had easy access to and lubed up the vacuum/electric switch which is under the brake pedal. Still I only get the 5-50 seconds.
My guess is a new or rebuilt switch is in order due to it not holding the vacuum, or maybe there's a vacuum leak somewhere else. I'm not sure.
As always thanks for your input.

Mine had a hole in the vacuum diagram caused by wear as it rubbed against something. I put a piece of insulation tape over the hole and it's been good for the past decade or so.

I would like to send you in another direction.

Had trouble with my cruise control too.
The reason was the cable pulling the throttle.
The cable in the tube was so dry that the actuator could not pull it again after releasing it a little.

I disconnected the cable, hold it upwards and flooded the innrer tube with good bike oil.

Now I am happy with my cruise control.

Same thing happended with the cable to the automatic gearbox.
Suddenly I could not press the throttle down.
The reason was a sticky pull-down cable to the auto box.
    Oiling solved that problem too.

    cheers from Europe!
    Michael

Thanks Michael. I had done that (I used a mixture of WD40 and antiseize) on a 240 I owned previously. Worked good. Thanks for the reminder.

Check the vacuum solenoid/diaphragm at the pedal VERY closely. They have a tendency to rub/wear through the rubber diaphragm at the small end (the side that faces the front of the car). You may have to remove it from the car to give it a good check--and if there's a problem, you'll have to have it out to fix it anyways.

Mine had a small worn spot about 1/8" long, I was able to put a layer of black RTV on it and it's been good for a few months now. I'll see if I can find a picture for you.

    Hope this helps!

    Steve A-

    Hi Chup,

I'd say the electrical side is good when it's working, but you may have a bad connection that fails when it gets warm.

I'd check the #12 fuse to make sure it's clean, and look at the plug to the vacuum pump. There are more connections but they're behind the instrument cluster.

There's also the switch in the stalk to consider.

After it quits, does it start right up again when you hit resume ?

    Peter

Sometimes it will start back up when I hit resume. Most of the time not though. I'll give the electrical side a good look too. Thanks.

The leak could be in the switch behind the brake pedal, in a hose, or in the diaphragm under the hood. You will need to invest in a Mighty Vac to be able to track it down.

    Sounds like a vacuum leak.

Check the pedal diaphragm for a pinhole leak.

Otherwise it may be a hose joint at the switch or pump.

Bypass the switch completely to test the switch.

    No speedometer issues?

There is a Green Book just for testing late cruise...
