94 940 Fuel gage 900

I've had a problem with the fuel indicator in my 94 model 940 ever since I've owned it.

What used to be a random failure to read fuel level has turned into a total failure.

I'm almost positive that the problem is coming from the small solid state card that's located inside this cover.

Is this a part of the fuel sender circuit?

Will a similar part from my 92 940 parts car interchange with this card?
There are some very small solder circuits that may have failed, and my eyesight (and steady hand) is not capable of doing the repair.....even with a magnifying glass.

It's the part located under the red arrow on the picture.

Thanks for any replies.

Nobody has mentioned this could be the classic 940 fuel sender problem. Do a search on BB... Lots of info on that.

My 94 940 fuel gauge is random and I assume it is the fuel sender. I have a replacement, just have not bothered to install. With a 19 gallon tank it is pretty easy to just keep track of miles and refill as needed using the trip odometer.

I have the same year car and the same issue. A slight, openhanded "tap" on the left side on top of the dash, roughly where the gauge is, will usually fix it, temporarily. :-)
My mechanic explained (and showed me an example) that it is from the circuit board and instrument cluster expanding and contracting over 2 decades, working a solder joint loose.
I decided I didn't want to pull my dash apart to get to the instrument cluster and reflow the solder.

Car is driven less than 5000 miles a year, so I just try to keep the tank full to avoid running out of gas because the fuel gauge gave up the ghost.
    Good luck!

      Dear ianagain,

Hope you're well. It is not necessary - on a 940 - to 'pull my dash apart to get to the instrument cluster".

The cluster is accessed as follows:
      (a) use a flat-blade screwdriver with a tip 1/8" - 3/16" across the flat;
      (b) insert the tip through one of the rectangular holes in either side of the black aluminum instrument cluster bezel
      (c) press inward (toward the door or the center console) to release the spring clip, that retains the bezel (this may take several tries, so be not discouraged)
      (d) remove the black aluminum bezel
      (e) remove both T-25 screws, that secure the spring clips, which hold the bezel and remove the spring clips
      (f) remove four T-20 screws, that secure the cluster to the support frame
      (g) gently pull the cluster towards you: the wire bundle is stiff with age, so go gently.
      (h) disengage each wire harness connector from the cluster's connector (no need to make notes, as the connectors are of different shapes/formats.

You can then put the cluster on the bench and work on it as you like.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

    Thats the dimmer board.. 900

    Hi Hill Billy,

In your photo, the metal box pointed by red arrow, contains the dimmer circuit for the dashboard & central console lights. Its not any part of fuel gauge circuit.

I would start at the boot. Check the electrical connection for the fuel gauge as in photo below. You may short/jump the brown (BN) and grey-white (GR-W) wire simulating a full tank condition. If thats ok then you may need to check the fuel sender in the tank (the float may be stuck in its tube). There could be broken wiring to the fuel sender too (could be repaired).

    Regards,
    Amarin.

There is no image that I can see on this post. In your reply to j.pelchat you evidently wanted to include a screenshot in your post but I don't see an image there either.
