re: 3D printings

Hi All,

The technology is getting better everyday and the price is getting lower. I can't wait until a 3D printer price comes down to $1000.

Look through turbobricks' maint and nonperf forum for a thread on printing Volvo parts...

It seems like this technology is still embryonic. For example, I don't think you can print reinforced parts (GRP, with glass fibers, for example) and I am not sure about the ability to add UV inhibitors to the plastic raw stock to keep parts exposed to sunlight from disintegrating. Not sure as well about the temperature characteristics of the feedstock... will it remain flexible in the Minnesota cold or soften in Arizona sunlight? Lots of questions...

        Hi Steve,

"I don't think you can print reinforced parts"

I think you can design your part so that it's strong. For example, you can add ribs inside of the center console to beef up the strength. Or make thicker wall thickness. Or even put honeycomb structure in between walls. Or change to material like polycarbonates... Of course, you need time and money, definitely play time for experiment.

For me, I want to see smoother finish surface. It's still too pixelated for my taste.

        As always, thank you.
