What makes an alternator tick? 700 1991

Curious..

I see this rebuild kit for a Volvo Bosch alternator.

Two bearings and the regulator? Is there anything else to be concerned with, other that the windings failing?

The reason I ask is I replaced the regulator with new Bosch part, after an inadvertent short gave the alternator issues... and it still acts up a bit. It needs to be reved above 1k for the dash lights to go out, and occasionally when driving at normal speeds ..the dash lights will come on dimly for a very short period, and then go out.

A new Gates belt is there as well.

What am I missing? Thanks.

    OTOH it is likely one of the windings is gone, and the alternator has low output. I have had that in my 91 for a few years now. I have to rev it off idle before it will start charging. It will go awhile like this, but a new bearing and brushes and regulator will not fix it,

      Since you replaced the brushes, they need some run time for the brush to armature. Since the armature wasn't refaced flat, your brushes don't sit against it flat. Just a thought.

    Check your ground cables before you start buying anything, especially the one to the engine block from the battery, It does have to charge the battery, also check your battery terminal connections, easy fix issues here can caused all sorts of weird problems and are next to nothing to fix.

      Found a problem.. 700 1991

      Glad I went back and checked connections.

      The point the main ground from the alternator is attached to would not get good and tight. The bolt also holds a wiring harness clamp in place.

      Apparently b4 when I was cleaning ground points ...and removed and reconnected that bolt ..I crossthreaded it ...would not tighten properly.

      Secure and tight now. Hopefully that corrects the issue!

      I will double check. I did this initially, but did somewhat ignore the big one from the battery going under the motor (read it was not critical).
