BEWARE of Walmart tire mounting - lug nut over-torquing S90-V90

My local walmart tire and lube center told me the "lug nut torque chart we have to use" calls for 95#, not the 35# then 63# specified in my 940 & S90 owner manuals.

I called walmart corporate and the local store manager is supposed to call me back. If he can't over-rule tire&lube, screw walmart.

Walmart knows better than Volvo? I doubt it.

Walmart may have 'cheap' stuff, but buyer beware! The last time I was there, I asked about a set of tires for my 1996 850. They would only sell me "V" rated tires, per the manual? Where can you cruise at 150? I wanted "S" as they ride a bit softer and the tread lasts longer.

As to lugnut torque, I live less than 3 miles from a tire store. As soon as I get home, I loosen all 5 and re-torque them. I don't care if they use a torque wrench, I don't trust them.

BEWARE of Walmart tire mounting - lug nut over-torquing S90-V90

I got a local tire store to swap some tires around on my S90 and at pick up time, asked them what torque they used on the wheel nuts. The manager relayed the question to the kid eating his lunch in the corner of the reception area who said "er - 100lbs as usual". I told the manager that was at least 50% too much and we went into the shop where he looked it up on their wall chart...63 ft-lb.

So, as Klaus states, you can't even trust a specialist tire shop.

They offered to retorque, but I declined and took it home to do it myself, telling the boss that I would be back to have them replace the brake rotors for free if they had been warped. (They seemed fine.)

turns out that they read the chart wrong - the store manager checked it and said it specified 63# for 900series volvos

I'm still gonna make sure the tire tech reads the right line

I do not all tire shops to remove and install my wheels on a Volvo anymore. heck, on my 940 it is printed right on the dust cap!

Watched the shop use an 90# torque stick putting the lugs on last time I let them do it. I pulled in a parking spot, loosened the lugs and re-torqued. In the process the shop manager came out to inform me (mostly politely) that they use torque sticks so I have no need to do an DIY job of double-checking their work. I asked him to bring me the stick in question and then look at the stamp on the dust cover...then he tried to argue with me.

That was the last time.

Hi all!

What happened to "the customer is always right" ?

While I don't have any Walmart here I always ask these tire shops to tighten the nuts by hand. Back home later I'll use my torque wrench.

Worth mentioning here, years before I knew the importance of 63# torque all my tires were tightened using shop air tools. And no warped disc either. I always use Bosch discs as I could get a pair of them almost to the price of one Volvo disc. Who knows maybe these have improved metal formula.

Regards,
Amarin.
