rear caliper mounting - tightening torque setting 1800

Hi all,

I am finally getting back to quality time with my 1970 P1800E and I thank the list for helping me get it to the point where it is now.

I am replacing a rear brake caliper, but don't have the torque setting for tightening the caliper bolts. Haynes has the spec for the front caliper, but not the rear. I've searched the BB but can't find it.

Thanks. w.

rear caliper mounting - tightening torque setting 1800

Just did this job, as I removed the rear calipers for painting. i used the front caliper spec, 80-100 ft.lbs I believe. One thing I'm curious about. The bolts seem to have a small blue dot in the threads. Looks like a hole was drilled and some type of plastic inserted. I've always been told that caliper bolts should be Loctite'd, so I did so. But i'm wondering if those blue plastic inserts aren't supposed to accomplish the same thing and, if so, are the bolts re-useable without the addition of additional thread locking compound.

Nylon locking bolts and nuts 1800

Dave;

Caliper bolts should have a provision for secondary retention...this is satisfied by the locking pellet in bolt (See: http://www.longlok.com/s.nl/it.A/id.42693/.f ) or Loktite for a plain bolt...some say not to reuse Nylock nuts, although Carrol Smith who knows a thing or two and has more experience than any of us here, disagrees (ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyloc_nut#Reuse_safety )...I would apply that to similarly to Bolts with nylon locking pellets: OK to reuse...but if you also applied Loktite when you reinstalled, you're in the belt and suspenders class, and can rest easy!

Cheers

Address below is a downloadable original Volvo repair manual for a 1971 1800E.

All of the specifications are in the "0" section at the beginning of the manual. The brake torque specs are on page 0:14, page 18 according to the Adobe reader.

Are the bolts the same size as those on the front? If so, I'd say the same setting would apply to both front and rear.

I generally go with 'as tight as I can get them with a two foot breaker bar'
