erratic speedometer behavior 700 1990

While driving my speedometer fluctuates up and down, is this typical of a car with high mileage? Is there a simple fix?

Having the same issue with my '90 740 GLE. That and an ABS light on.

So far I have pulled the cluster, reconnecting all the contacts with dielectric lube. I then cleaned all the ground points under the hood, ceptin the main one that runs under the motor. Still gotta do that.

That and I am going to re-pull the cluster ..and clean the connections. They did not look corroded at all, but I do understand corrosion can be hard to see at times.

It was bouncing all over. Now it has settled to pretty not working, period ...but will bounce up a bit when I hit a good bump. Makes me wonder if there is an issue with the connection on the rear end. On my list to check.

There is a good bit on this issue in 700/900 FAQ.

Hopefully some new ideas and help coming for both of us.
