Hi, I've got a '91 740 with a broken speedo/odometer. A friend has a '89 740 turbo. Are the instrument clusters interchangeable? Is it possible to switch only the speedometer? I know that there will be gauges I don't need on the 740 turbo panel. I just need a speedometer for inspection.

    Follow the previous link to the 740 UK FAQ site great write up but herenis the short answer.

    NO

    You will need one from a 91 or 92 740 or 940. You can swap the TACHS so turbo or not doesn't matter.

    A 93-94 will also work but the gas gauges won't work without modifing the cluster or swapping the senders . As 91-92 good speedos can be hard to find you may want to explore this route.

    Also make sure the sender is good and the wiring to it. Therer is a tie wire at the sender that is known to cut into the insulation on the sender . it is likely the speedo as they are notoriously bad on 91-92. It took me 6 months and 5 clusters to find a good one. Also note that it may take a week or two for a replacement speedo to settle in . some speedos I had were dead right away but came to life latter. This happened on my fifth and has been working well for 6 months now.

      I did manage to find an instrument cluster. i think i just got lucky and
      called a salvage yard in CT at the right time. Had my doubts, but it
      worked, got the car inspected, so I'm good to go for a year.
