I made the foolish mistake of taking my new-to-me 91 240 through the brushless car wash today and the high pressure water did a number on my sunroof, which I thought was working flawlessly. Water leaked from around the back on both sides, and it appears that some got into the white headliner and is causing it to sag a little bit--not too badly.

Questions:

1) I've read about rear sunroof drains. Where are those located? I'd like to check to see if they're clear.

2) should I try to remove any parts to let the headliner dry out to minimize damage, or will it dry on its own? If I should attempt something, do you have advice on what part to remove?

The car wash soap also left horrible marks on my paint, but that's another issue. The paint looked good, but perhaps the clear coat wasn't as stable as I thought. Lesson learned...

There are a total of four drains. The fronts are located in the far corners and can be seen by opening the sunroof, standing on the sill or a stepladder and looking in the corners. The rear drains are at the far rear corners--attached to outlets on the "pan" which encloses the sunroof. Those you really can't see - unless you remove the headliner. Even with the sunroof panel removed they are way back there. The drains exit through vinyl tubing located at the forward section of your trunk. Aside from clogged drains it sounds like you're a candidate for new sunroof seals. They don't keep ALL the water out but should limit the flow to an amount the drains can handle. Replacing the forward seal can be done with the sunroof panel retracted in place--but the rear panel seal requires that you remove the panel. -- Dave

Thanks for the info. Is it worth trying to fuss with the small amount of white headliner material around the periphery of the sunroof opening that has become somewhat loose?

I thought maybe I could remove the strip that runs around the rim of the opening and try to remove slack in the headliner material, but perhaps I'll just make things worse. Any experiences here?

I've never dropped a headliner but I think it may be productive to check the outlet ends of the drain tubes first---clogs are often right there. -- Dave

So I poked around in the trunk and found two vinyl tubes on each side that meet in a Y connector. The front tube (when looking from the trunk) seems to connect to the drain pan for that vent under the back window. The tube that is further back is very hard to reach--is this this the tube for the sunroof drain? I'm not quite sure how to blow it out with compressed air because the diameter is so large.

Having compressed air is helpful--wrap a rag around the blower tip to seal the gap--don't make it completely air tight -- you don't want to blow the end off the outlet. Open the sunroof--drape everything with sheets/tarps. -- Dave
