740 speedo/odometer failure 700 1989

Car is a 1989 (new shape) Volvo 740GL sedan.
The trip meter and odometer suddenly stopped working a few days ago and the speedometer drops to zero occasionally. A whack on the dash sometimes restores operation of the speedo but not the tripmeter or odometer.

I pulled apart the speedo unit and found this:

One of the teeth appears to be missing off the bottom right of the small grey gear. Is that normal? The large gear wheel is fine ( it was replaced a couple of years ago ).

Also found these dodgy-looking pins on the instrument cluster(second from the right):

There is also a dodgy looking one like this on the speedo unit too.
If they are bad how can they be repaired?

Thanks for any advice.

I too am struggling with a speedometer that is jumping sometimes, stable other times, and will not work at all at times. Next try is to resolder all the points on the back of the cluster. '90 740 GLE

As for yours, I would think a careful filing of the damaged contact ..as long as there is plenty of contact area on the underside, it should work fine with some dielectric grease.

Also I wonder is there is any thin metal tape that could be cut to shape and cover both sides of the damaged contact. Just an idea!

Post back any success.

You can buy copper circuit board paint to redraw the circuit board.
