Crankshaft, Camshaft, Rear Main Seal Material 900 1994

I've tried Volvo OEM seals, Elring Viton seals, and Elring Silicone seals. In my opinion, the Silicone seals are junk, the Elring Viton seals are better, but not as good as the OEM Volvo seals.

Any idea what the OEM Volvo seals are made of?

Dear jd620,

Hope you're well. Even if you had list of igredients for the seal material, that might not explain the seals' durability. How the ingredients are processed - temperatures, length of time, any solvents - may be as important as the actual ingredients.

I'd guess these seals are made by a contractor. The actual formula likely is proprietary, i.e., a closely-held secret.

If you want it badly enough, you might hire some ex-SEALs to find the factory, gain entrance, grab the formula and deliver it to you.

With the formula - ingredients and processing steps - you still need to find someone to make the product. That involves making molds, which is very costly.

In the end, it is cheaper to buy the Volvo brand item, just as it is for heater hoses, and other mission-critical items, that are hard/costly to replace.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Not a clue, but I might mention I have had some excellent results with Felpro seals.

Recently had a rear main sell replaced in the wife's 940. I had a Felpro , but the mechanic said it went in too easy, and he was suspect of it doing a good job. I bought an Elring and watched him pound it in, very concerned about it getting warped because it was so tight.

Forward to a month or so back when the front crank seal blew out on my 240. Had it towed to the same shop. I tore everything down on the front of the motor, and he installed a Felpro I had already bought. He put it in, but had the same comment about it going in too easy. I put it all back together with a new t-belt.

Today that Felpro seal has done great...no leaks at all on the 240. Not sure how well the OEM Volvo seal does ....maybe it is not as difficult as the Elring to get in.
