My "new' 87 240dl 200 1987

One day about 2 months ago a friend that works for an auction company called me and said that today's estate auction was over and nobody had bought "this old brick Volvo" and asked if I was interested......... Not that I need another project by why not, havnt had a Volvo yet!

So I asked him how much they wanted for it and to my horror I got the typical answer -.- "well they are gunna scrap it tomorrow, so what ever that is."

Not the first or last time I've heard that ;)

My next call was to the guy incharge at the auction Co, he told me it diddnt run but had a title. Good enough for me. Although he diddnt fall for my gracious offer of me coming to pick it up out of the kindness of my heart, $200 was enough to get the car and title, so I hopped in the truck, hooked up a trailer and off I went

Here she is when i got home

Prior to replacing the fuel filter I emptied the tank of old gas using the Intank pump, I activated the pump by jumping two fuses. What came out of the tank was clear with no signs of rust. I've delt with a rusty tank before this one seems good.

I will run through what you posted next chance I make it out to the garage, thank you for the detailed walk thru!

Here she is after a good pressure washing and an interior detail

And so it was for about a month or so! It's got a list of small things that need done but nothing major that I could see/hear.

    BUT.......

Doing about 60 on the freeway last night the 240 died.....

So I pulled off the Hwy, popped the hood and poked around. nothing seemed out of place, And the car fired back up first try so I figure screw it!

    Wrong...

Soon as you go to give it gas it wants to stumble and die :/

And now we are up to speed.....

    So, onto the Q & A :)

Q: how would I go about testing the external fuel pump

      Fuel pressure testing 200 1987

"Q: how would I go about testing the external fuel pump"

A1. Quick and dirty but not comprehensive. Enable the fuel pumps using a jumper between fuses 4 and 6. Find the soft hose at the exit of the fuel pressure regulator. Find the vacuum hose from the manifold to the fuel pressure regulator. First take the vacuum hose off and be sure you don't see any fuel leaking from the regulator. Next, with your fingers upstream of the hose feel for the fuel leaving the regulator. If unsure you can feel it, give the hose a squeeze downstream and listen for the main pump to grunt a bit and you'll for certain feel the pressure with your fingers then.

Not comprehensive, because there's a remote chance the regulator could be defective in a way it hardly ever is reported to be.

A2. Find the adapters for 14mm flare and make yourself a means of connecting your fuel pressure tester to the Bosch fuel rail. That's the comprehensive way, but a hurdle in time and sometimes money.

If you hear the main pump cavitating, suspect the tank pump or its hose.

Assuming you replaced the filter when you fixed the nylon connector hose, have you looked inside the tank for the rust which happens when a car is a barn find? You may have clogged your new one if it is as bad as some have reported. That would explain the run for a while and quit nature. Do a volume test from the return line. However, there are other explanations -- and most would say your symptom sounds like a faulty AMM operating the LH in limp home mode, but to me it sounds like what you suspect; fuel delivery.

So with all that and 5 gallons of fresh I gave her a crank and off she went!!!!!

    Issues:
    Temp gauge doesn't work
    Aftermarket stereo doesn't power up
    Wiper blades are trash
    Interior needs a cheep detail
    Exterior needs pressure washed
    Door seals are toast
    It's an auto tragic :/

Then it drove just fine for 3 or 4 days but decided to quit on me in a parking lot: after an hour or two of poking and prodding I resorted back to bugging a buddy that used to work as a tech at Volvo for some help. Via the phone he diagnosed it as a relay, so I walked the 7-8 blocks to parts store for the $20 relay

Decided to replace all the fuses too

Needed a valve cover gasket anyway ;)

Also cleaned up the throttle body cus is was dirty and a valve adjustment is only a one man task

The ignition system wasn't new but looked pretty good in comparison to the rest of the engine bay so I re-gapped the spark plugs, cleaned the rotor, and cleaned the cap.

And the car gods smiling down upon me cus the MAF/MAA looks to be an almost brand new unit :D

By the smell of the gas tank and the mildew inside I'd be willing to bet this car sat a while. So I opened the windows and drained the gas tank for good measure. Found a cool little trick of disconnecting the fuel line coming out of the tank and crossing two fuses with a jumper to use the Intank pump to empty the tank rather than my POS hand pump, worked petty damn good IMO. Also picked up s new battery, oil and filer, air filter, and a fuel filter.

So at this point I have to admit I'm a datsun guy at heart

but I have a soft spot for lots of different old makes and models :)

So far everything had gone pretty much as planned ;)

Then the fuel filter was up next, and upon inspection I found out why the gas smell was so pungent
