Timing belt removed at a random spot 900 1993

I'm in the middle of changing a head gasket on my '93 940 NA, decided to go ahead and get a timing belt and replace it during the process.

Last week, I hit a roadblock trying to remove the pulley so that I could get the timing belt and cover off, but now have the special tool (decided to spend the $ instead of the rope trick.)

So now I am ready to finish the head gasket job, and was planning on doing it tomorrow, but my son had the day off from high school, and decided to work on the car today when I was at work.

Long story short, he did not rotate the timing marks, and removed the pulley and timing belt without consulting me. My research said to rotate the engine and line up the timing marks before removing the belt. My 16-year old did not follow these directions.

What should I do now? He said that nothing moved, but I'm paranoid that something is going to get messed up.

My gut reaction is to put the timing belt on, and then to align the timing marks before removing it again to pull the hood.

Any feedback on this plan? What is the best way to put the belt back on?

Help!

Not to worry. It doesn't matter that the belt came off with the engine stopped at a random spot because the B230 is a non-interference motor. All the components (camshaft, auxiliary shaft and crankshaft) can be lined up with their corresponding marks independently. -- Dave

Thanks! Took your advice when re-assembling the front of the car last night, and everything looks good. Got all of the marks lined up, and everything seemed to correspond with the timing belt, also.

Putting the finishing touches on tonight & hope to get it back running today or tomorrow (fingers crossed)!

After the belt is on with all the marks lined up--don't forget to turn the crankshaft a few degrees clockwise (normal direction of rotation) with the tensioner loosened--that will get all the slack on the tensioner side. -- Dave
