Anybody have the correct part number for the front u-joint to mate to a M47 manual transmission?

Tasca lists #3520997 as "front", but with no parts illustration to confirm this.

FCP tech email states part #3520997 is for center and rear positions only.

So...

And on the subject, which u-joint is best? Is it worth the investment to get $54 OEM versus $11 Meyele?

FYI: The quibo I received from FCP as Volvo OEM #1220843 is the BMW quibo Febi #04435.

That is, the FCP OEM Volvo quibo is actually the stronger BMW quibo.

Were there any other numbers on it?

So whats the problem with the flex discs on your cars? My 87 and 88 look just fine still.

It fits fine. I'd stay away from uro or meyle crap.

FCP says it's not for 93 240's, do you use the same bolts?

Yes. It was identical in size/thickness to the one I replaced. Wonder why they say it's not for the 93? It should fit any M47 application.

I guess it's just a BMW part number and the car I entered is the 93 Volvo? I will probably get one, the price seems reasonable.

M47s cnxtion to the drive shaft is not a U Joint, but a Flexible Rubber round - 6 bolts run thru - that sits between the output STAR 3 pts on the tranny and the similar STAR 3pts on the drive shaft.

when they fail, they shred. and you will know it with warning. Unless you race it.

The only ones I've had fail while driving were in a BMW...rumble slap slap rumble...not going anywhere. TOW pls.

as far as yours, depends on oil leakage onto it, how aggressively you drive, visual inspection... (dry rot). Do you do a lot of driving in the mts, with lots of hiSpeed downshifting...5th to 4th and back?. That's why Volvo replaced the steel UJoint, as a damper to the clutching shift on the drivetrain, as opposed to the old OD internal damper in the M46.

if you do replace yourself pay close attention to orientation and to how those 6 bolts go.

Take pictures before and as you take it apart.

According to this article, you can purchase from a BMW vendor a flex coupler that is far stronger than the Guibo OEM for 240 / 740. Nice to know.

The BMW reference is to a BMW part, I believe made by the same company, or another OEM for BMW, that is more rigid and of superior, stronger construction than the factory install or what you purchase today. Some MMs thicker, tho. Is a drop in for the M47 equipped rear wheel drive Volvo.

I have a spare Guibo flex coupler, yet it's 50 miles away in a box, contained in another box. Else I'd provide an image, front and back. The OEM is beefy. Most after market is Meyle, not made in Europa, of course. Like installing Meyle strut mounts. (Not to do that again.) iPd also sells the MTC (URO) version. FCP Groton no longer sells thw flex coupler.



Nice.

Cast iron alloy block, cast iron cylinder head, rear-wheel drive and the BMW manual transmissions are not overly complicated. I like the spartan interior, like the early 240s and before. (Does not like leather at all.)

And they *still* build them with inline 6-cylinders with rear wheel drive.

Love those 60's Beemers. Only downside is no cruise control.
As a contrast, a friend of mine has an 88 iX and it is full of all kinds of gauges. Nice solid 4-wheeld drive car, but busy on the inside.

OEM doesn't mean Volvo, you need to ask who does manufacture the part.

Right... OEM versus "Genuine Volvo". Not the Tasca site, the FCP site nor the Lisle site state a manufacturer.

Whatever happened to "parts is parts".

Already ordered the part, so it is what it is now. I emailed FCP for the manufacturer. Will advise.

Please let us know about the manufacturer for the part, I probably should replace mine also.

From FCP regarding Guibo PN 1220843:

"...this would be the same supplier as the Genuine piece. It just can't be listed as such because of licensing agreements."

Interesting, let us know if the Volvo name has been ground off or what other identifying marks may be on it when you get it.

I have bought rear TABs in the past with the same story that had what I assumed was the name Boge ground off.

yes the seats were crap. a friend who is 6'4, and this is one of the few cars he could comfortably fit in, bolted in a Volvo seat from a 140.

the bodies couldn't resist the eastcoast winter salt baths either, had to weld in plates in the trunk as the rear shock towers rusted thru. I also had a 68 1602 - basically the same car with a 1600cc engine - with a single barrel solex carb that could cruise all day at 80mph with that 4 speed and not drive you nuts with engine noise, like the then current B18 tractor engines that Volvo was running.

I always said that BMW's only failure was that it didn't build a body strong enough to last the life of the energy that car could put out.

But is was a small window imho, the later models with the square tail lights, like a fine wine that made its reputation on a few years of remarkable vintage.

Most M47s don't have a front u-joint on the driveshaft, but a rubber flex joint.

However, there are some that do have a front u-joint and the part number you have found is the correct updated part number.
