Car shuts off 1996 960 900 1996

sometimes does not start quickly. sometimes cuts off while at a light. On the road, no problem. even when hot and you crank it to get out of a parking space, it may cut off. Here is what I have done.
cleaned the throttle body, cleaned the air mass meter, cleaned the electrical contacts for the throttle position sensor, the air mass meter, and the idle air control valve.
Car is not setting any codes.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
HELP
Thanks,

Jimo

Bad battery cables? They can rot on the inside.

Camshaft position sensor or its wiring?

Ignition issue? How old are your ignition wires? Bad power stage? Not sure if your car has one...

All ground wires clean and tight?

Where are the grounds for the fuel injection?
Thanks. Jimo

Do you have a code scanner? There may be OBD II codes that are not showing up on your instrument panel.

On my 850, I know there is a fuel injection ground wire that runs from below the fuel injectors and grounds at the firewall. The car isn't here so I can't look for any others.

I would also check the electrical component grounds.

Check air hose for cracks, damage etc.

I did scan for codes and did not find any.

I planned to remove the ignition control units and clean under them and reattach. Only got one done today, but the screws were only finger tight. I cleaned the ignition control module, cleaned the mounting point and put on new dielectric grease.
Car seems to be doing fine now, but I plan to remove the other one and clean, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Jimo

Hi jimo,

Unless you already have ... and I'll guess you have ... and you have no OBD-II fault codes ....

You may want to check the relay / fuse block board or platform that is either under and behind the center console ashtray or to the right of the center conceol under the kick panel to the left side of the passenger side leg well (if you will).

Check relay function, wire harness termination where they secure to the platform and the relays bond to when you install them.

Uncle Dave Barton helps us again ....

http://www.davebarton.com/volvorelays.html

Specifically:
http://www.davebarton.com/pdf/700-900relaylocations.pdf

You may want to inspect and treat contacts with a dialectic grease as you have aforementioned.

Also, grounds for fuel injection ....

See the 1996 wiring diagram PDF:

http://volvowiringdiagrams.com/volvo/960%20Wiring%20Diagrams/Volvo%20960%201996.pdf

Shows ground for some ignition components, also. Common, or collected injector ground on PDF 14 of 45, it appears (lower left).

And see:

http://www.k-jet.org/documents/greenbooks/900-series/

Though 1994. May not be current with 1996.

Volvo Tips may lso have what you need, yet you need flash to access the files, and so, verify you flash media run time is current. Remove the older shockwave player, if you have it. No need for Java.

Hope that helps.

Kittysgreyvolvo and Jwalker,

Thanks for the info and suggestions.
I drove the car yesterday after cleaning and tightening the front ignition control module and as a precaution, I replaced the relay. It drove fine

Today I removed, cleaned and reinstalled the rear ignition control module.

This is my daughter's car and looking back, I had replaced coil #5 two times in the last six months. Since the front ignition control module screws were loose,
and the front one controls cylinders 1, 3, and 5 I am beginning to think that maybe the problem all along was a loose ignition control module and not a coil.

As info the car has 247K. My daughter bought the car at 89K years ago.

Now I plan to check the ignition control modules on our other 960's.

Thanks again,
Jimo

The battery cables are good.
It does have two power stages and the camshaft position sensor appears to be good.
I would think if the problem was one of these, that it would set a code.

As far as the ignition wires, the engine has one coil per cylinder and the wires look good.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Jimo

Fuel pressure regulator?

I have obtained a fuel pressure tester and plan on checking the pressure tomorrow.
I don't know if it has a pressure regulator, but it does have a schrader valve so I can check the pressure and see if the pressure does remains steady.

Thanks for the reply.

Jimo
