Turn signal 200

Normally when a turn signal begins to flash at a faster interval than normal I expect to find one or the other not displaying.

So when my righthand turn signal started exhibiting this behavior on the way home from work I made a mental note to look into the situation.

When I checked to see if it was front or rear I found them both flashing rapidly.

What is causing this?

Had exactly the same issue that you describe. Cleaned both right bulbs & grounds. No change. But after awhile, it returned to normal clicking. That was about 6 mos. ago. So I just left it alone. Hate to do nothing but if it works, don't fix it! Also, I have exactly the same 242 that you have.

That's pretty much what I ended up doing on Sunday. Only I replaced all turn signal bulbs and cleaned the right front ground having previously cleaned the right taillight ground on a different matter.

If I had to bet, I'd say the ground was the problem. It was kind of cruddy whereas the bulbs all looked pretty good. But who can tell? I should have been methodical and seen if cleaning the ground alone would remedy the situation.

While I was at it I replaced all four taillight bulbs, one of which was rather dingy. That cured an intermittent BFW display (the aforementioned different matter) which occured when first turning on the lights but would always cease on it's own within a matter of seconds. Oddly, flashing the high beams would also make it stop.

All of this in anticipation of a safety inspection.

      Thanks to all who replied.

If your bulbs are good, I would check for degradedt turn signal wire insulation causing a ground fault somewhere, usually where the wire breaks over a sharp edge in the body work. The front turn signals are a prime candidate for this type of failure. You can repair the insulation with heat shrink tubing or electrical tape.

I don't know--but the first thing I'd do checked the grounds. In the front on the right side the ground is bunched with others on the windshield washer tank bracket. In the rear I think the ground is at one of the fixture mounting studs. Maybe a change of bulbs to be sure of them? -- Dave

First remove bulbs and check for/remove corrosion on the bulb contacts and the inner surface of the holders. No joy? Install new bulbs.

The TS relay senses a current draw lower than what should be seen with two good bulbs, to trigger the double-speed flashing. As you suspected, that is its bulb failure indicator. Reduced current flow through two bulbs will give the same result.
