Front wheel bearing 900

A groan while driving led to an inspection of the front end and I determined the driver's front wheel bearing is ready for R&R. There isn't too much info about this here so I wanted to ask

Can the car be run with this condition; will anything be damaged if I continue to use it?

Recommendations for parts, bearing assembly, cap, bolts.

Any insight into the job itself? Should I consider doing both sides

TIA

    rule of thumb 900

unless you are in rural mexico 100 miles from anywhere resembling an auto parts store fix the car before driving it any distance and anything more than school district speed.

the bearing and hub are one unit and not expensive

wheels bearings, ball joints and tie rod ends are not things you want to drive knowing they are bad or near failure. once your steering is compromised or goes.......... well you get the idea.

    Front wheel bearing 900

    Hi,

How many miles is your car? A groan while driving? IMHO it could be some rubber suspension parts. I think a low rumble is much more likely to suggest front bearing wear. My 1994 940 still uses its original front bearings now at about 860000 km.

The replacement front bearing comes as a sealed unit. I don't think any re-greasing could be done for this bearing type. That being said I've replaced my rear bearings with Optimal brand from Germany at about 800000 km many years ago. I replaced them after hearing slight rumble at the back. But the rear OE ones still have some life in them (only slight visible wear) and could have done some re-greasing if I wanted to. As the half-shafts were already out I replaced both of them anyway.

There are also Optimal front bearings for the 900 series. I think they are good enough if you don't want to go OE. Anyways OE is always better. Just my experience.

    Regards,
    Amarin.

About 240K on the car. Definitely front bearing as spinning the wheel without brake pads clearly makes considerable noise.

The main "danger" of letting a wheel bearing go too long is if it winds up spinning and scoring the spindle. It would have to be very bad for that to happen though. -- Dave
