Timing belt replacement question .. 200 1992

I had a front seal blow on my 92 240.

In a hurry to get everything off and cleaned up, I did not line up the marks prior to removing the belt.

So is my answer to make sure # 1 is at TDC with the mark on the cam gear at the correct spot, and line up the crank and auxiliary shaft on their respective marks.

I have done this a number of times, but I always made sure all was lined up before belt removal as in the guides.

I am having this idea I could get it all 180 degrees out. Ouch!

Thanks.

I can't think of a situation where you had not removed any of the pulleys or the distributor where you would go wrong lining up all the timing marks. If you were building the motor from scratch and lined up all the timing marks, you should be good. Or even if you just broke the timing belt...

Put it this way---#1 and #4 pistons will be at the top of their travel each time the crank marks come around. The pistons don't know which stroke they're on till the camshaft is set - and its mark makes #1 at the start of its ignition stroke. The auxiliary shaft mark in turn sets the distributor to #1 ignition. -- Dave

Makes sense.

If I had been thinking I would have remembered replacing the broken belt on the wife's '92 940.

She is shooting for 500k... now has just below 460k. 😜

Thanks for taking time to reply.
