backup mail-car quit on me - Rex-I/Regina Bendix ECU B230F 700 1991

Alright, I hate to bother you guys, but I got a head-scratcher on my hands.

1991 Volvo 740 B230F Rex-I/Regina Ignition with Bendix ECU.
Replaced the timing belt about 500 miles ago.

I pulled this thing out of the woods a few days back because my main mail ride, a 1998 Jeep Cherokee, had a broken valve spring.
The old clunker did well for about 7 hard hours then decided she'd had enough of that mess and shut the engine off out of nowhere.

She's getting spark and the fuel pump hums on. I will be changing the fuel filter tomorrow. After troubleshooting it all day with the 7xx FAQ, it finally cranked for 30 seconds tonight, but but quickly died when I let off the accelerator. Anyhow, I suppose it could be somewhere in the seemingly sub-par Rex-I/Regina ignition system or in the fuel delivery, but it sure doesn't seem like it.

My next plan is to check the timing and crank sensor. Any ideas where to go from here, y'all? I checked the fuel ignition/pump relay and it is clicking on and off when I turn the ignition to accessory. And since I hear the fuel pump turn on (there is no secondary pump on this vehicle) I assume it's not the fuel pump relay/

How many miles on this car?

How many miles on the fuel pump?

What happens when you give it a shot of starting fluid (right into the throttle body)?

Randy

Starkie,

She's got a good bit of miles on her. Use to deliver newspaper on the reservation out in Montana. 23o,ooo?

The fuel pump has been on there a pretty good while there too, friend. Say 15-2o,ooo. But it was making noise when I turn the key to accessory, and it did crank and run there randomly for about 3o seconds before I came in from the shop.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply!

Edit: I forgot to address spraying starting fluid. It didn't have any effect this morning, but I will try it again tomorrow evening and let you know how it goes.

...and yet, another thought 700 1991

How much fuel is in the tank? What are the chances that the pickup hose attached to the fuel pump has failed or the gauge is incorrect? Just shooting from the hip.

After making a concerted effort to start the car with no results- remove a plug and see if it is wet with gas. While it sounds like a fuel problem to me it would be good to figure out if it was fuel delivery or ignition.

When was the last time you changed out the spark plugs?

Randy

20,000 miles is not a lot in the life of a fuel pump (my opinion).

I was thinking it might have 150K or so and I would have offered up my experience with one of those pumps that would run but not supply the needed pressure at that point in its life.

Well I borrowed an actual Volvo fuel pressure gauge from a Volvo guy I know and when I try to crank the car, it reads up near 400 kPA, which is good. I reckon that means the fuel pump is putting out good pressure and there's nothing in the fuel filter clogging it up.

Is it safe to rule out fuel delivery now as the cause of the problem?

Fuel is being delivered to the rail but we still don't know if the injectors are opening/closing.

There is a black cased relay on the passenger's inner fender close to the ABS module. That is the radio suppression relay. Remove it and insert a jumper between the two heavier wires and try to start it.

If it starts you need to resolder the contacts on the board or replace the relay.

Did you ever remove the plugs and check to see if they were wet after repeated attempts at starting?

Randy
