Sudden ABS and Battery Lights Come On, Power Brakes and Steering Gone S90-V90

This evening - in the middle of a beer run no less - I suddenly lost the power brakes and steering (an S90 is a heavy car!) and the ABS light and Battery light both came on. The motor is still running fine so I turned around and headed for home. Since more than one thing was effected, I suspect the fault may be a single issue. Does this ring a bell with anyone? The battery may be getting close to its end of life, any theories about this? I appreciate any and all inputs. Thanks, Doug

Look under the hood for a broken serpentine belt that drives the power steering pump and the alternator. But I don't see why this would affect braking and ABS function.

Here is a diagram of the belt routing:

Bingo. Serpentine belt wadded up and lying on the pulleys. The belt also got hot and left some of itself on the pulleys. Looks like a tow in to the shop in the morning. I could have sworn we did that belt some time ago...it just got the timing belt and water pump replaced a month ago, seems to me if there was a problem with the serpentine belt it may have been spotted then...THANKS!!

If the belt got hot it's a sign that it was slipping on the pulleys. That might be because it was badly worn and its "ribs" were shot, but perhaps because one of the pulleys it contacts was seizing up.

Check that all pulleys (except the crankshaft) that it contacts can turn freely. The idler and tensioner pulleys should spin easily and with no grinding/grating noises. The PS pump and alternator will have a bit of resistance, but should turn evenly.

Depending on your know-how the belt is easy to replace (procedure in the FAQ link I gave above) and costs about $15-$20. I did mine in about 5 minutes. A tow and shop charges will have you into $100-plus.

Agree the serpentine belt is quite easy to replace. Also the idler pulleys. Consider replacement of the belt tensioner assembly if it hasnt been done, I believe it's three 12mm bolts

Accessory (serpentine) drive belt failure - How long since timing belt replacement? S90-V90

            Hi Doug,

As the accessory (serpentine) drive belt failure came as a surprise, since you've owned your 1998 S90 since 2009 ....

            http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/1998/1998_maintenance/1998_all_maintenance.html

... how long has it been since the timing belt was last replaced?

Timing belt failure on the B6304 in engine in your S90 would be very nasty surprise, indeed.

Have you run a scan of the OBD-II just for the heck of it recently?

            Hope that helps.
