the fuel pump was noisy last week or two .. drove about ten blocks .. got temp up .. shut off for ten min and wouldn't restart. seems to have gas in fuel rail valve.

When you state it won't start, but has gas. Does that mean the engine cranks over but just does not fire up?

It could be the fuel pump.

But, was the car started up and run for a very short time? As in moving a lawn mower out of the garage. If so, search the site for "lawn mower syndrome".
This could be a case of that. It is where the lifters get over pumped and cause poor compression. There is a simple way out of it, but it takes a very strong battery and will power.\

Having no fuel pressure can also be a sign of the no start condition. When the key is first turned on the fuel pump runs for a second, pressurizes and then shuts off until the engine is running. So if it kicks on when the ignition is place on, then you are probably ok. Most of the time fuel injected engines do not seem to flood out, so not have fuel on the plugs is on the normal side.

        Hope this helps.

guess next step is to pull fuel relay and jump it to see it fuel pump fires up .
no it was ran long enough to heat up and not have the lifer problem.

So, you have determined that is has fuel pressure, and spark. But maybe the injectors are not energized. Or there is a problem with the MAF, or the temp sensor.

Sorry to jump in. Just want to help. Hangin' out down by the brickboard.com today, again.

Check the OBD? Though you have, as of 1996, OBD-II. So, you need a code scanner.

Do you have an OBD-II scanner for your 1996 Volvo 960 wagon, drzelmo?

                https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm#OBDIIScanners

OBD-II is a rather comprehensive diagnostic that indicates the thing that is failed or has failed, or leads you to the failing thing.

Though you can't start and drive the car, if you could, most auto parts stores, like the AutoZone will allow you to use there OBD-II code scan tool, if it fits.

Else, you can use a tool that connects between your 1996 Volvo 965 (960 wagon) and your (presumed) Windows laptop or other Windows computer. The adapter connects to the OBD port on your 1996 Volvo 965. The software, then, runs a code scan for all OBD-II enabled things like engine control, transmission, ABS, and such.

When was the timing belt on your 1996 Volvo 965 last replaced? Though quite serious if failing.

If such a fault, drzelmo, when the engine was last running, did you have any check engine lights on?

Did plug a obd 2 scanner , when first towed home . Didn't pull any fault codes?
Ran good , just no start when leaving did get up to temp. Has a new timing belt 5 months ago. Have a spare '96-960 for a parts car. Switched out cpu on pass side kick panel put the ? One in spare and it ran fine. Funny thing dead 960 started without the cpu plugged in? What is the deal with that? Plugged it in and dead 960 would start now but not stay runnen. Need to check more sensors I guess.

Check under cover for fried coils / bad wires. Also check wires to injectors where they are routed thru intake manifold. I had problems with my 93 in these areas
