Transmission Upgrade 140-160 1975

Just re-entered the Volvo world with purchase of a 1975 164, my third 164. This one has the BW-35 auto trans. There must be something better out there somewhere. Suggestions appreciated, either swap to a OD auto trans or a manual conversion with OD or 5th gear

    Planetman accurately outlined the parts required to swap my 75 model 164 from automatic to m-410 manual transmission. Does anyone have some or all of the parts? Please get on touch.

    On a manual conversion, I think that you may have pedal box space issues for that nasty third pedal. I think that it has been done; but, not a drop in fit.

    I am going to guess that the bell housing from an M41 B20 will fit on the B30. If that is the case, then the M41 conversion is probably the easiest manual conversion. Not a clue about automatic options.

      All of the Volvo 164 regardless of year, were available with either a manual or an automatic transmission although I am pretty sure the pedal parts do change over the years.

      So to convert a 1975 164 to an M410 you will also need to get the correct clutch and brake pedals along with an 8 bolt flywheel assuming it still has its 8 bolt crankshaft, a complete clutch kit, a clutch cable, the correct length driveshaft, an O/D transmission crossmember (they are different) and some wiring.

      M41s are for 4 cylinder engines, although there was a M410 made to fit a 4 cylinder engine, but the bellhousings are different.

        I knew that the 164 was available with a standard (particularly in Europe). I think the issue may be a difference in tunnel width which creates the pedal fitment problem - the BW35 being a wider tunnel than cars with standards? I seem to recall that on 140 auto to standard conversions the BW35 tunnel width creates some challenges with pedal fitment. I am getting my info anecdotally so I could be out to lunch.

          when I converted my 145 from BW-35 to M-41, The tunnel was not an issue. I believe the tubs are the same. The process was straightforward, having a donor car for the pedal box assembly. All the clutch cable fittings, and captive nuts were in the right place.

        Planetman, thank you for confirming my research to date on converting to manual trans using all Volvo parts. The issue now before me is that of finding sources for these parts. If you can help, please feel free to contact me direct by e-mail at mfitzinc@bellsouth.net or by phone (912)230-7867.

        I would not mind swapping for a Tremic T-5 trans if the Volvo M-410 is not available. Same for converting the BW-35 to a AW70-71 A/T, or some other later overdrive equipped A/T.

        If you confirm that you can help, I will check the crankshaft bolt pattern, I believe the vibration damper nut spec will indicate the flywheel bolt pattern, engine is original to car.
