fuel pump cycles for 3 minutes after car shut off 200 1990

my 1990 245 external fuel pump continues to cycle for a about three minutes after car shuts off. When it eventually stops I can hear the FP relay click. I swapped the FP relay as a quick check and did not change anything. No fault codes with OBD. Any thoughts on this?

I would ask a dealer's service department about this. It might be a computer upgrade.

The only reason for this action that I can think of would be to add pressure to the fuel rail so that the next start-up might be quicker.

I usually pause a few seconds after I turn on the key before I try to start my cars so that the fuel pressure might be up and shorten cranking time.

Perhaps Volvo thinks that most people do not do this and this extra fuel pump run is beneficial.

No possible valid reason at all for a 3-minute run time after key off. Cooling fan...sure. Turbo timer for electric oil pump...absolutely. Fuel pump would actually pose a (extremely minute) safety risk with no benefit.

So to the OP, is retrofitted with an electric cooling fan to aid AC performance when idling? That could potentially have a key off retained power feature.

I still think the fuel pump relay wiring is hacked. It would explain why, if a properly functioning ECU with an intact hybrid chip were installed, the issue would only then present itself.

I have never seen this problem before, it sounds like a timed really is involved. Is there any aftermarket electronic devices installed?

Is this a new symptom? Is the car new to you? What color is the label on the ECU?

My guess is the answers to these questions will be:

    Don't know
    Yes
    Not White

If I am right, someone has hacked around the now failure of the hybrid chip that supplies ground to the fuel pump relay but did it in a very non-standard way. The only thing I can think of in 245 that could possibly have retained power that long would be the interior lamp delay.

      owned car for 4 years
new problem started when my ECU went and car was crank no start.
      ECU replaced pink with white
i have timed it and it will run for 3 minutes then the relay clicks and it shuts off.

Grasping at straws but do you have an aftermarket (as if there was a factory one!) remote start installed?

it is weird and want to try and diagnose before I spend $ at shop

          no remote start.

when i fixed the crank no start I first bought a used white "factory" ecu and the problem continued so I assumed it was a slightly faulty ecu. Then I went to an aftermarket white and no difference.

I have (3) 245's- this 1990, a 1993 and a 1988. so i can swap some parts while grasping at straws. I did swap ECU's to help diagnose that issue but I don't remember if the fuel pump issue happened during that swap. I was just happy to know what I needed to get it going again. I guess I could swap ECU's again.

          thanks for your thoughts
