73es clutch cable 1800

Having an issue with clutch travel. The clutch engages/disengages about an inch above the floor. I have all the adjustment out of the cable I can get plus I have added a spacer under the ball on the end of the clutch cable in an attempt to get a higher pedal. Pedal engagement has not changed much.

Cable looks like it's been there a while. new clutch kit installed several thousand miles ago. Could there be some issue with new clutch kit? Can a cable stretch that much?

Just looking for a little direction before I start replacing parts randomly!

Thanks

After you repair the cable - find out how to adjust the clutch - it is NOT adjusted by moving the engagement point - clutches are generally adjusted by measuring free play.

If the free play is correct and you do not like the engagement point, something else is wrong.

If you have no free play, the clutch may be slipping all the time.

Removed the sheath from the old cable and found a 1" long unstranded section of cable. All that was left was the solid center core which would have soon snapped! Installed the new cable and all is good plenty of adjustment and a great feel to the clutch peddle.

    Thanks for all the responses

    Having fun

Your cable maybe starting to fray. Look under the dash where the cable enters the car.

And if the rubber grommet for the clutch cable in the firewall is badly deteriorated, you won't be able to get the last bit of adjustment.

It's more likely it's the clutch fork that is failing. They are known to bend. Volvo made a replacement for the first design--I don't know if that was before or after the 1800 cars switched to cable. I had the same sort of symptoms with my first 140 car--a '68, at that time 10 years, old w/55k. -- Dave
