Tail light wiring question (this one really has a question) 444-544 1960

1960 544
Could someone tell me what the single filament bulb on the top and the double filement bulb on the bottom is supposed to be? Running, stop, and turn signal, but which is which?

I love this car but the wiring needs to be sorted out. It my least favorite thing.

Thanks
hawk

Tail light wiring question (this one really has a question) 444-544 1960

The female spade connectors should be insulated - they make a connector for this.

Remember that any circuit actually has two parts - power from the battery to the load, and ground all the way back to the battery.

For instance - license plate light - it gets power from a wire - the ground - a metal clip on the socket must contact the bumper overrider, the overrider must contact the bumper, the bumper must contact the bumper bracket, the bumper bracket must contact the body, and the body must contact the battery. If any of these contacts are bad, the light does not work!

There are almost no ground wires on your car, the parts of the car must all have good electrical contacts.

If I ever work on the wiring of my '64, I will add some main electrical grounds.

An easy way to add a fuse is to cut the wire in a convenient place, add two insulated female spades and insert a spade fuse between them.

If you have power to a device, and it does not work, run a temporary ground back to the battery

Tail light wiring question (this has the answers!) 444-544 1960

Hawk;

Top is Directional Signal(20W), Dual element lamp are Marker(5W) and Brake Lights(20W). Reference wiring diagram (12V) http://www.sw-em.com/544%20Wiring%20Diagram.jpg

Remember when doing wiring work: The color code is your friend.

Cheers

Tail light wiring question (this has the answers!) 444-544 1960

Thanks Ron,
The color codes would be great if the previous owner hadn't switched colors two and three times in a single circuit and ran new red wires to stuff in an attempt to make it work (which failed).
Your answer will be a big help.

Tail light wiring question (this has the answers!) 444-544 1960

Ron is correct for the factory location of the signal and brake/tail light locations.

I know it's not stock, but I changed mine on my '60 PV544 in an effort to move the brake light higher as follows.

It was simple. I swapped the wires inside the lamp assembly to make the upper lamp for the brake lights and the lower for the running / signal lights.

I realize it's not a huge difference, but it does get the brake lamps a few inches higher.
