Help with high beam light not staying on! 200 1993

I must hold the signal indicator arm in order for the high beam to stay on..... The light does come on and shines but as soon as I let go it does not stay on itself they way it normally would. One mechanic said get the whole arm it think they called it the stalk..... Another guy said its the high beam relay that is on the drivers side fender wall big silver relay. It did not make sense to me so help! Lynn it's a 1993 240 model

Try removing the dimmer switch and cleaning it with electrical cleaner spray. Clean its wires too and make sure the screws that hold it in place are aligned properly and tight enough. That did the trick on my 90 240...

Oh, to access the dimmer switch remove the piece of plastic on the top of the steering column. Dimmer switch is located at the junction of the turn signal stalk and the steering column.

Thanks for the help I am not doing the work myself why the relay? Not understanding why it could be that part rather than the stalk? Also made sense to also have the mechanic check the connect first? What are your bets saying thanks?

I'll tell you this bluntly. So far everyone giving you advice is not quite right.

On the '93, the hi-lo or "step" relay got moved to the passenger side in US. It is not on the drivers side. Let us know if you're in Canada.

The stalk only provides one function with respect to the headlights, so if it does the flash to pass it also is providing what it needs for the high beams to lock in via the relay. The problem is definitely not in the stalk.

However, that does not mean the relay is defective. Folks like to replace parts, rather than take the time to trace circuitry they don't understand. Unfortunately, the connections are the source of most electrical troubles, not the replaceable parts, so many of these expensive "relays" get replaced for no reason, and you foot the bill, even when the true reason (a dirty connection) is found.

Do this: Locate the step relay (a silver colored can) located on the passenger side fender under the hood. Remove and re-plug all of the connectors on it. If that doesn't fix it, take this URL http://www.volvowiringdiagrams.com to your mechanic and ask him to trace the trouble before replacing the step relay.

Please forgive my blunt approach assuming you want to see at night.

It is a pretty easy job. Ask him to check the dimmer switch connections and clean the switch itself with electrical cleaner spray. The switch is attached under the stalk at the the steering column. The stalk is expensive ($100+ if you have cruise control) and IMHO it probably isn't necessary to replace it. The problem is most likely a dirty switch or perhaps a loose stalk or switch...:)

Tough call as it could be either. I lean towards the relay.
