Patching old speaker holes 444-544

Greetings,

The previous owners cut holes in the front cockpit side panels and rear seat shelf for speakers. They sounded good but looked like total crap. I'm definitely going to repair the back pair...but wondered what the thinking is as far as keeping the front holes, so that a newer radio could be fitted at some point (that's assuming I won't get lucky enough to find an original one that works). Might mount a newer radio in the trunk, so I wouldn't ruin the dash (large hole must be patched from a Kenwood radio...ugly).

Panels for the 544 are available to cover the holes that have been cut, if that's what you want to do. They are pretty easy to install, but the drivers side can be challenging if you don't remove the heater box. (The panels aren't super expensive either!)

Eric at Hi-Performance should have them. VP would have them too:

Factory Bendix AM radios can be found on Ebay. They aren't very hard to rebuild if you have a decent understanding of electronics.

    Hope this helps!

Many thanks...I'll check on Ebay for a radio. The car came with a very ugly Pioneer radio from the 70's.

I didn't know there were patch panels available for the front. My car has not heater (removed who knows when), so at least it's an easy area to get to.

Very difficult to find a 240 radio that works great. Either the dial creates awful static and/or the cassette playet has probkens ie: repeatedly wants to flip the cassette or noisy or both. I have a couple of working units in a couple of 240, but replaced broken units in the other two 240's. Just don't like buying radios at the pull and pay...you never know what you're getting.
Just bought a brisbane 230 from clutchfield for 119.00. It's bluetooth for music and phone...I love it.

I probably didn't make my original post clear. The PO cut speaker holes in my 444 in both the front side panels and also in the rear deck behind the rear seat. I am planning on patching the ugly rear holes, but was wondering what to do with the front holes. I can repair the holes or simply reinstall new speakers to use with a new radio.

Check out his place for retro radios with modern sound and functionality.

I have one of these in my 444. I did install front speakers in the kick panels, but they weren't original to begin with and I did it properly, so it looks good, imho. Not "original", but good.

I also installed a pair on the rear deck, which I eventually plan on mounting flush below the hat shelf so you can't see them. I have an original 6x9 speaker cover for the one center speaker that came with these cars way back, but that just covers an open hole. Found that on ebay.
