    will a 94 940 shifter work in a 93 940?? 900 1993

    Dear Blindboy,

Hope you're well. The '94 and '95 940 shifters have longer wiring harnesses - and have a larger connector - than does the '93 940 shifter. I suspect that on the later two models, two smaller harnessses were combined.

On the '93 940, the shifter's harnesses connect at the lower right corner of the fuseblock. On the '94 and '95 940s, the longer harness suggests the connection point is on one side of the footwells. I'm not sure which one.

In short, I do not think the shifters will interchange smoothly.

All this said, I don't think you need to change the entire shifter. The part you need to change is the Neutral Safety Switch (Part #3544184). This is mounted on the driver's side of the shifter box (North American models). Changing this switch requires removing the shifter from the car. I just did this job. The guidance in the FAQs was not very helpful, because different shifter formats were covered in a single treatment, without sufficiently clear separations.

If you decide to replace the switch, so post and I'll write-up the procedure for doing this on a '93 940.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

        Dear Blindboy,

        Hope you're well. According to https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-neutral-safety-switch-740-780-940-3544164, a Neutral Safety Switch from a '91 940 will fit in a '93 940.

I'd clean the switch contacts on the '91 switch, using an aerosol corrosion-remover. With care, the switch can be opened, so that all contacts can be cleaned, and then coated lightly with di-electric grease, which will delay renewed corrosion.

This switch (Volvo Part #35441640 shows as "no longer available" in a Volvo parts database. If this is so, getting a new one might be a good idea.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

Spook, I have a '94 940NA which will only shift into gear from park when the shift lock button is depressed. Is this a symptom of a bad neutral safety switch, or is that related to another problem? Once the car is in gear, the transmission seems to work fine...

            '94 940 requires over-ride to shift out of "Park' 900 1993

            Dear Wareagle,

Hope you're well. The neutral safety switch (NSS) prevents starting when the transmission is in positions other than neutral or park. Does the car start in this positions? If so, then that exonerates the NSS.

The more likely cause of this failure is a micro-switch, mounted on the passenger side of the shifter, see: https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionAuto.htm#TransmissionNotShiftingOutofPark .

            Hope this helps.

            Yours faithfully,

            Spook
