engine swap and now loss of current to car

I did an 240 engine swap. I put a 1993 engine in a 1989 Volvo 240 . I swapped the intake, exhaust and wiring harness on the new engine and put back in the car.I now do not have any current to the following....instrument cluster, fuse box or lights. With a test light i checked and do have current to the fuel pump relay, alternator,in and out of 25 amp fuse in engine compartment and of course in and out of starter. I do not know what to do now. Any help appreciated.I am not electrically inclined. i would also speak to someone that might be willing to help. Thanks, Gale 720-987-0037

    Gale,

    How's it going?

    Just wondering.

Gale, you probably are lacking the ignition switch circuitry, which changed when airbags were introduced in the 240. For anyone to guess at the remedy, you would have to describe in detail to them WHICH wiring harness(es) came over with the 93 engine. Give particular details where connections are made with the black battery bus box screwed to the bracket alongside the old 25A fuel injection fuse on the inner fender -- that's where the power source to those items you mention originates. Did the '93 have fuses on the battery post?

In any event, for you to get any help here, you will need to write a book about exactly what you did wiring-wise.

    Hi Gale,

You installed 1993 Volvo B230 engine, from a 1993 Volvo 240 unibody, into a 1990 Volvo 240 unibody? Did you swap the transmission or anything else driveline wise?

Though Art Benstein, Onkel Udo II, Pageda, james_a_sousa (who has replied here), and other brickboard members, could enumerate off the cuff what one needs to make a successful swap as you describe here ....

You would also need to swap or modify:
    - fuse box wiring (adapt to the 1990 or revise it to a 1993, or in between, well documented)
    - the dash head (speedo, dash light box thingy)
    - engine control wire harness for the version LH-Jetronic / EZK ignition from the 1993 or to the 1989

I'm sure there's more. One would study the wiring diagrams from each.

I'll bet you brought the 1993 engine with it's wire harness and engine control box ECUs? The connection from the ECUs to the rest of the wire harness (power, ignition, to the dash head, and such, are different between 1990 and 1993 [variation even within 1993, iirc, as earlier 1993 and later 1993 - or it could be 1992]).

So, if you well enumerated all connectivity changes in your swap, you may find help here. Yet if not, you may need to perform a granular evaluation to the connector and even the pinouts by number and conductor. I believe the ignition switch is unique between the years.

For example, the 1990 Volvo 240 dash head had different connection at the rear of it, even though they appear physically the same. The 1990 fuse box does not include the fuel system relay. That is the 25 AMP blade relay usually located between the battery and the left front inner fender. (Though all of these should have been replaced with new by now.)

So, since I like copying and pasting hyperlinks, waiting for a callback from yet another recruiter for my ninth technical writer job since 1995, I can direct you to some free resources on the Internet for such information. That about all I can do. A phone call to you in Denver or Boulder or somewheres, CO may not treat such a complex conversion. Though I'll try and help as we love them Volvo 240s like children and family members and fuzzy pets, none of which I have.

Like james_a_sousa says, with your trusty multimeter, and such.

    Questions.

    Hope that helps.

    Best of luck.

I would put your test light on every fuse in your car and find out what has power, and what does not.

Post these results and modify your title to mention that you have test results.

Do you still have the wiring that you took out? Did you compare it to the new harness?

What engine ground straps do you have?
