960 wagon -
replaced pulley and tensioner with factory volvo part.. old one did same chattered and jumped at start up/cold, this one seems to do it a little longer after driving awhile when it is warmed up a bit .. changed other idler pulley also ... is it something else or did i get a bad one from volvo? stearing pump - ac clutch - altenator sound ok

    Since the new part and the old part act the same way, I'd look for the problem someplace else. Take the belt off and try turning the alternator, ps pump, and AC clutch by hand. Are all the drive, driven, and idler pulleys in the same plane ? Etc.

      Good point... look for power accessory (alternator, etc.) mounting bushings that are failing, allowing the pulleys to move out of parallel with the belt. This is a regular issue with 740/940 cars. Buy new bushings to repair them.

        thanx,will check for out of alinement on the three items , putting a stethoscope on them bearing sounds ok.
