old car , engine flush 140-160 1971

I have obtained an old car, 1971 144 single carb, just a hack!!

It runs OK but I would like to provide the old dear with an engine flush. There must be heaps of sludge in that sump, I woul prefer not to drop it for a clean
.
May I have an opinion as to the best method and materials please

A waste of time, money and effort. The sludge stays on the bottom of the sump unless you upset it, i would not even use a high detergent oil either, just make sure the oil has enough ZDDP in it.

When it needs a rebuild, you strip it down and clean it and send it to the hot tank. Don't fix it if it ain't broke + Let sleeping dogs lie!

I have used solvent flushes three times on old, dirty engines.

Each time, I have had lifter problems some time later.

I think that this is because the top of the engine drains down through the lifter area.

Once, I used an old shop vac, a crevice tool, and a scraper to clean the top of the engine. This actually worked well.

The next time I try to clean up an old engine, I will clean under the rocker cover, than install a new filter and detergent oil.

When you change the oil, try to drive the car up on blocks or ramps to tip the car so that the sump drain is low and make sure the oil is hot, you will get more gunk out that way.

Best method...d not do it. Worried about sludge, run good quality oil with a high detergent quality (honestly, any major brand oil these days) and change at short intervals. Two reasons:

Where is that sludge going to go before it become liquid again? Likely the pump pick-up screen. This can easily lead to oil starvation and premature engine rebuild.

What do you think is keeping that engine from leaking out all the seals until you have spent some time making sure the pcv system work and works well. This include cleaning the flame trap and replacing all the vac lines that are dry rotted.

There so, so many better places to spend your time and money. If you absolutely, positively feel you have to do this, just add a /2 quart o ATf at the oil change and let the engine gett up to operating them for about 15 minutes. Then change the oil and filter.

OK now here is one of those questions from the truely ignorant,

Does ALL the oil picked up from the sump go through the oil filter before circulating through the engine

Not always. First it is sucked through the pickup screen and through the pickup tube. The oil pump then sends it toward the oil filter unless the bypass opens because the the pressure is too high.

So except for very cold conditions or a very blocked filter, oil should pass through the filter. Occasionally at start up, a portion might go through the bypass.

          Look here....http://www.auto-rx.com/

This stuff really works and has been used to clean up many a sludged up 95 SAAB turbo. I had a 240 that used oil. It no longer uses a drop. It does it slowly though, which is safer. It uses esters not solvents. Not cheap but, it is the real deal. When you call them, most times you talk to the owner/inventor. And the reviews? They are real too. I have not found one bad review on this product except for some putz with a hopeless Mitsubishi turbo that was beyond hope.

I am in the process of doing a "clean" cycle on my 1993 940 T. It uses oil too but, not for long. Once the "clean " cycle is through (one oil change cycle)you then change oil and filter for the "rinse" cycle. That is when the oil consumption stops. Standard procedure is two bottles of auto RX in with a new oil change, and change the filter at 1500 miles with dino (castrolgtx) oil. then run it for another 1500 miles and change the oil.

What OUII wrote. If you're really worried--take the valve cover off and examine any sludge/sediment up there. that should give you a good indication of what kind of care it's had. Back in the '70's I used to find 6 cyl and V8 engines caked so bad you could barely see the rockers and pushrods. It didn't take much imagination to figure out how much care the car got. -- Dave
