Rubber Exhaust Hangers: OEM Volvo, Starla, or even Bosal?

Folks,

Any luck with exhaust rubber hangers other than Volvo OEM.

Need to replace the two donut at the front muffler / resonator of one 240, and replace all six of the rear funky square hangers for the rear muffler of all three 240.

I had several no-name donut hangers that secure to the front or the front resonator break. These did not have any ID info on them. These were like under six to 18-months old when they failed.

(And no, I was not confusing the exhaust donut rubber hangers with the rubber donut hangers under dash vent holdin' up the under dash cosmetic insert that hides the under dash stuff that slides over the underdash [floor] vents. Yes, I actually did this before. Yes, you can laugh. Nyuk!)

Art, you say you use Starla in your Tue Nov 17 04:47 CST 2009 post here:

https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1386935/220/240/260/280/exhaust_hangers.html

Do the Starla rubber hangers last as well as their exhaust system pieces?

The Starla hangers are around or under 2$ for either the donut (front resonator) and square peg-hole rear muffler hangers.

Art and folks, have you had good luck with Starla rubber exhaust hangers on 240 and such, or is OEM the way to go in late 2015?

I'll call Brentwood Volvo and West County Volvo parts Monday. I'll see if other local part stores have at least Starla.

Thank you,

B.

    Starla 200

Those in the Starla bags don't seem to last very long or maybe I just don't like getting under the car to replace them and see how the pipes themselves are corroding. Sorry this isn't scientific and I can offer no comparison with other brands, and I still buy them anyway.

Last set used last week: 29 months/19K college student miles. Pipes still have a year or so left I think. Also, we really are never sure when the resonator hangers fail -- only find out when the rear muffler goes clunkety-clunk out of the driveway.

      Hi Art Benstein,

Thank you. 29 months seems okay for the Starla rubber hangers.

Whatever I had as hangers did not last very long and went clunkety-clunk after my last cat-back exhaust replace.

Had to replace the three forward-facing pressed in studs, on that triangular plate steel at the front of the catalytic converter. Had them pressed out, and used the heaviest steel hardware (bolts, washer, and nuts) I could on the thing. The OEM original to the car catalytic converter scrubs the exhaust gas for CO, CO2, and oxides of nitrogen very effectively. The shell is rust free. Though the cat got well-basted all over with synthetic type F fluid from the M47 transmission fluid leak. Lucky it did not cause a fire. Was hundreds of miles from home on the highway.

I had some extra Volvo hangers I'd pulled off a few salvage yard Volvos, yet these were 25+ years old, I'll guess. So, these are the rubber hangers that are on there that failed.

I doubt the rubber hangers that came with the cat-back exhaust were Starla as they failed in like six and maybe 18-months. A ping and then clunkety-clunk.

A very good point you make though ... climbing under and inspecting the hangers and the exhaust piping before it goes clunkety and then the roar of un-muffled exhaust erupting unexpectedly! I use the proper Volvo exhaust clamps. The exhaust unions seem not to corrode as fast when you use the Volvo brand exhaust clamps. (Versus the guillotine-like exhaust clamps.)

Thank you. Sorry to go on so.

      Happy all-Volvo Holidays!!!!!

Starla - Found some sort of used .... 200

Though I lost these. Rummage in the stack of boxes and voila! Front resonator donuts and rear muffler rubber shackles.

And now we remediate the clunk. Have to as I may be tasked as a chauffeur in the 1991 Volvo 240 in a few days.

        Thank you.

late in reply and at this day in age prob unuseable for you

          BUT FWIW

The last couple of sets that I got, I walked into Midas Mufflers, with one in hand and asked: do you have any of these?

they did. a couple of bucks.

It is not an EXclusive Volvo Item.

            Hiya CB,

Thank you and Sure Happy it's Thursday!

I'll keep in mind, the exhaust stores / shops like Midas that sells the round black donuts for the front resonator.

Though since finding the two blue boxes, packed away in two separate white boxes, I'll work with these. Though in the image there is an OEM do'h-nut made (molded) in 2007 or 2008.

Though thank you kindly for the nice reminder on where to get replacement exhaust hangers. One wonders if Midas and like shops have also quality, what Tasca calls "shackles" of quality for the rear muffler.

One enjoys an exhaust system that remains well-secured to the Volvo car. With recurring inspection - as Art mentions in his post here - for broken hangers and corrosion.

Though I have a host of stuff to treat and care for on these 240s I have.

            Thank you. Happy Holidays.

            Fresh Found Flaxseed Mornings Boyeeeeee.
