1989 240 Windshield Wiper Relay 200 1989

My intermittent wiper is not working, but the other two speeds are fine. Could this be a bad relay?

1989 240 Windshield Wiper Relay 200 1989

Hi Mossie,

It could be a failure of the intermittent relay.

Please look at the wiring diagram PDf files here:

http://www.volvowiringdiagrams.com/?dir=volvo/240%20Wiring%20Diagrams

You'll want to look at PDF page 3 of the "Volvo 240 1989.pdf" file.

If the wipers work at the low and fast speed, yet not intermittant, the cause could be:
- Loose or corroded connection of the wire harness at the wiper stalk under the cover of the box (I dunno hhhwhut to call it) in front of teh steering wheel below the dash head. (Remove the two screws right and left and gently lift up.)
- Failure of the contacts in the wiper stalk to close the circuit when you move the wiper stalk selector to the intermittent (top) wiper position. These do wear over many years' use. Sometimes, the rivets that secure the electrical box and hinged assembly to which the wiper stalk pivots on, where the wire harness wires connect, can fail, causing wiggle room the wrong way (Worse on the wiper stalks with cruise control!)
- Loose connection or corrosion at the wire harness connector at the intermittent wiper relay (under the left or right kick panel in the drive leg well, somewhere in there). (Also, verify the black wire that serves as connection to ground, has a good connection. Though I dunno where the black wire ground for the intermittent wiper relay wire harness connector goes right now on the chassis. So, follow it to the securing bolt or screw as it can also be loose or have corrosion.
- Loose or corroded connection at the wiper motor wire harness connection on the wiper motor itself. The white and black strip wire.

A spare wiper switch stalk that you know works can help with the problem solving. I keep a few spares and have had to replace one or two of the regular (non-cruise control) wiper stalks, or used a regular wiper stalk switch to replace the cruise control wiper stalk switches where the rivets had failed.

A wiggle at the connector or the screw or bolt that secure the end of the ground wire to the chassis sheet metal or frame (loosen, retighten, or just tighten if loose) can break the corrosion. Some DeoxIT can help.

Dan (pageda), oldduke, Art, Onkel and others will have a better suggestions.

I'm looking at the wiring diagram now in the aforementioned PDF. Sort of a cheat sheet.

Questions?

Hope that helps you.
