My 1995 960 had been running fine until the other day when on the highway it cut out but not completely. It lost a lot of power and was still running but seemed like it was a running on only 3 cylinders. i replaced the front (left) ignition amplifier with one from a running car. It started up and ran fine. Drove it fir several miles, and it ran fine. Stopped for lunch for about an hour. Started back up fine and ran for about a half mile and it did the same thing. I had the two amplifiers from the car tested at a parts store and both tested bad. Don't see how that is possible. Does it sound plausible that one of the amplifiers is cutting out? Would any other sensor cause this problem?

Are your up ignition coils all good? Plug in a scanner and read your codes.

Then oils all test good. I'm getting codes on A-2 of 113 $ 115 which appear to point to the injectors. The problem can be duplicated by warming it up and running for 4-5 miles.. Once warm it will cut out.. Thanks for your thoughts!

Your car has 2 power stage controls. One controls even cylinders and the other the odd cylinders. If you are getting miss fires in odd or even cylinders check this and also measure the resistance for each coil, they should be close.

Other option, is to check the fuel pressure regulator for leakage at the vacuum hose.

I had some strange idle problems with the 960 and it was caused by a bad temperature sensor. Check the resistance it changes with temperature.

Have you change the fuel filter?

Are you getting any OBD codes?

My apologies for the delay in replying -was called out of town for work. To your question - yes I get codes 113 & 115 on tester A-2. The manual says problem with fuel to njectors. This problem. Only occurs after the engine is warmed up and the sits for a while. It starts and runs fine and the cuts out. Any though s will be most appreciated.

Check the wires to the injectors. They can chafe where they run though the intake manifold & short out. Had that problem on my 93. Easy fix. Also check wires and connectors to coils. There is a thread somewhere on replacing these with Volvo parts from another model. I put braided heat shield (from computer store) on the wires when I did mine. The coils live in a hot environment.
