Is this OEM water pump a knockoff? 900 1994

Ordered what I thought was an OEM waterpump from AutohausAZ for the 940. While it does has Volvo stamped on it, none of the ID numbers correspond to what I ordered. There are two numbers on the pump; The printed one states that it is made in the UK -127514b The second number is stamped-03b1103.
The part number on the printed packing list states;
Genuine SUS to 271975 (SKU:271830 OE)
It did come in a blue Volvo box printed in Sweden. Also the impeller isn't solid like the original.
Genuine vs OEM Hmmm.... Have I been taken? If this is indeed the best I can now get from Volvo, Should I go with Hepu?

Dear vacuumhead,

Hope you're well. If the name "Volvo" is cast into the pump housing (i.e., not found on a paper or plastic label affixed to the pump), it is reasonable to assume that the part is genuine Volvo, because it came in a box, the appearance of which is consistent with a factory-original item.

Over time, car makers shift suppliers and part designs may change. Thus, while the factory-original water pump could have been made in Germany or Sweden, Volvo could have found a British supplier, with a lower price. The numbers on the pump housing might designate that supplier and/or the date of manufacture.

The impeller format change could reflect cost-cutting and/or improved efficiency. A lighter-weight impeller may not reduce pump efficiency but might reduce the load on the pump's bearings or the engine: a lighter impeller might simply take less energy to turn.

As to the part numbers, 271830 has been superseded by 271975.

In short, I conclude if the pump supplied indeed has "Volvo" cast into the pump housing, then it is a genuine Volvo part.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Good point... The the labor was probably outsourced. I also don't believe a well known parts supplier like Autohaus would risk damaging their reputation with such subterfuge.

Just another note on suppliers to Volvo -- I believe it has been at least 10 years passed since we first noticed Volvo water pumps were being supplied with stamped impellers. It surprises me you still have one of their originals, if you expected the cast impeller. Speaks well of the OE (not OEM) parts, if not your ability to care for your car.

You're right. I must be loosing it. I can't recall why I didn't replace the pump nearly two years ago when I did a valve job. The car did have 130,000 on it at the time.

Only 130K? That and your good maintenance is the answer. If you are losing it, we want to find it.

I don't agree with those who consider the coolant pump strictly a mileage-based maintenance item. There are too many factors in a car's care and variables in the part's construction to put a mileage number on it. If antifreeze is neglected, or belts are too tight -- well you see the problem. Yours lasting 20 years is the reward for your not abusing it.

Most of the credit has to go to the previous owner who took care of it. My 91 240 wagon with 300,000 miles is another good example. It was previously owned by an elderly couple that over 14 years had all the work done at a Georgia Volvo dealer. I have their book with all the receipts. They could have bought a high end new car for all the money they invested in it. For the last decade and 100,000 miles I benefited from it.
