240 cps replacement ? 200 1992

Has anyone actually replaced the crankshaft position sensors on one of these cars ? If so, how did you do it ? I would have to have hands the size of a 10 year old and a joint between my wrist and elbow to put a finger on it.

After removing the exhaust pipe it was straight forward...

Greg

I have slid my left hand in to position above the bolt then used my right hand to palm a small wrench to the left hand.

I couldn't get my left hand in to position if it was holding anything.

Why do computer engineers get Halloween and Christmas mixed up?

Because 31oct = 25dec.

I do it the same as Art - short 10mm combo wrench. Works on later cars with AC "in the way", too.

Threads in the archives discuss.

Easy (for me) to remove bolt via a long extension & swivel.

If it's frozen in the bracket, that's difficult. I've broken brackets, had to use heat to melt the plastic when the unit has swelled from water seeping into it.

I the later years they moved the AC plumbing directly in the way. On my '89 I can get up and under Exhaust header #4 right to the CPS. So you are correct, it does involve a multi jointed 10 year old. Holding his ankles and lowering him into the back of the engine compartment is not unheard of. : )
With the '92 you will want 1/4 drive tools....a long extension and swivel sockets save the day.

I am refining my technique. I pad the edge of the fender to protect it, then remove the radiator reservoir cap, and place a scrap of plywood on top to lay on. Then you can get comfortable while you position your left shoulder close to the firewall. In this position, you can snake your left hand in to guide the socket on the end of a flex-joint and extension to the bolt head. I like to tape all the pieces together (including the bolt during re-assembly). I'm slow and it takes me about twenty minutes, but its not too hard.

"I'm slow and it takes me about twenty minutes, but its not too hard."
Regardless, it's still preferable to borrowing a multi-jointed 10 year old. Even inquiring could cause problems.

That sure is a good description of your technique to get to that CPS!

When the hood is up and we are laid out under there, it looks like a the car is having us for lunch.

I gave up on using tape on my swivel joints a long time ago.
I find a neoprene "O" ring that will stretch slightly over the swivel and reach around pins.
It fits down in and the around the dog ears. It stiffens up the flop without restricting all of the swivel range.

When putting a bolt up into the socket, I use stuff called "duct seal."
I can get at the local hardware store. A glob of it is cheap and you can mold it around things for a fit.

There is another product use for insulating A/C lines from sweating that will work also but it's harder to find.

Also there is stuff used by Volvo to hold wiring harnesses to the cars body. It's Really sticky "gunk" though.

Yep! One would have thought, of which the designer didn't, there are 360 more degrees around
the flywheel to mount that thing!
Guess he was lazy at using mathematics to shift the location. Maybe his thinking was it had to line up to the piston strokes?
I'm sure that leaves three more places available.

Go figure?

Phil

I've used plumbers putty stuffed into the socket and then pressed in the head of the fastening bolt. Also, I've taken photos of the CPS with an iPhone. This helped me to confirm the condition of the CPS cable insulation. And, then, I painted the head of the bolt before installation. It really shows up better in photos when you have to do an unlikely CPS replacement again. Removal of #4 plug cable got some of the obstructions out of the way.

For the fun of Volvos,
Mike
