re: 87 245 auto - oil separator 200 1987

Hi All,

FYI. I replaced the original (I think) oil separator at 212,000 miles or about 2 years ago. It was partially clogged and it made the new rear cam seal to leak. I kept the old unit and didn't know what to do with it. Today, I decided to cut into 3 pieces and take a look.

The overall, the chamber is clean but the top part of the vent hole area has a heavy build up. I look forward to cut and see my current oil separator for a comparison near future. Thank you as always.

The 2 previous owners did a great job replacing oil religiously.

    Hi All,

FYI. I glued it back together, used a half can of the CRC brake cleaner. The total cleaning time was 5 minutes.

OK, you glued it together to test the effectiveness of solvent cleaning. You did not say you put it back on a car -- that was my leap to conclusion.

Sure I believe you. Expect no less from an Ironman who can overhead flux core his floor. Your photos are par excellence!

No need to be sorry, I didn't explain well. 200 1987

            Hi Art,

I know you are very smart but you can't read my mind. I didn't explain well. Sorry goes both ways.

You like the photos, it's not me. I use my smartphone to take photos. I like my old Iphone camera than my current LG camera. The photos taken by a LG phone seems a little superficial. I am not complaining since we got the phone for one penny under 2 year contract with AT&T.

            Happy Friday.

Thats why I change the oil every 3k using dino oil and never have to replace the oil separator box 205k on one and 147k on another.

        Yes...use dino oil! 200 1987

        Joe,

My sentiments exactly! I changed the oil every 3rd month. Just 3 litres w/out filter change. Filter replaced once per year. Dino is cheap. No oil leak. Oil separator box about 5 years old. Engine very clean!

Amarin just loaded up at Pep Boys black friday sale 5 quarts of Qstate, Castrol, Penzoil or Valvoline with a filter for $9 after $12 rebate.Synthetic is a waste of money in these motors.

        Uncle Swedish Baklava,

What did you use to glue the oil separator breather box back together after cleaning it with brake parts cleaner?

Hope you and the family and yours are havin' some super swell holidays!

        Thank you,

low temperature glue gun 200 1987

          Hi Kitty,

I glue them together and then cleaned it. As I was holding the box together with a moderate force, the brake fluid didn't leak in between the seams. At times, I shook it like crazy. lol

Last weekend, I fixed our family cars for 3 days in a row, without an air tool, I felt beat up but it was fun.

low temperature glue gun 200 1987

            Hi Swedish Baklava,

With a low temperature glue gun? I'd not ever imagined using a heated glue gun for that. You've done this before. Maybe I need to get one also.

I'd used a glue gun to decorate fancy wine and beer bottle with shiny glass beads to make candle holders and even make Christmas and other decoration. So, no doubt, you can use it to re-secure and reseal an inspected and treated oil breather box! I doubt you could use Goop adhesive sealant, though, which I thought of using if the breather box cracked along the seam like they can.

I need to also treat the breather box on my 1990 240 DL li'l red Wagon as it is weeping oil around the seal. Yet I disconnect and sealed the vacuum line and exhaled through it with the oil fill cap on. The air pressure came up through the piston rings is all (so far).

What repairs did you apply to the family cars? A solid three days of repairs? Do you have an impact wrench (electric or air) that was not working? What repairs did you do? Heavy sort of work where an impact wrench would help?

I need to do more repairs to mine. Coolant leaks, a failing rear wheel hub, and low pressure fuel line with gas smell coming through them, and on, and on. You think you're ahead of the repairs on these Volvos 240, or whatever auto you own, and then you have something needing service as you and everyone well knows.

Volvo Christmas Card this year? (As if you have enough to do already.)

Sorry to go on so long.

            Thank you!

            Happy Holidays!

              Hi Kitty,

"OK, you glued it together to test the effectiveness of solvent cleaning. You did not say you put it back on a car -- that was my leap to conclusion." Said Art.

I think I didn't explain clearly what I was doing. Art nailed it. I was trying to determine if it's better to clean the breather box or replace it with a new one. You decide for yours... I know what I am going to on mine.

Over the weekend, I was doing a normal maintenance repairs like flushing old brake fluid, replacing struts and more. For me, the hardest thing about fixing a car is to loosen the lug nuts and putting the car on jack stands. It takes a lot out of me. If the car is light like our Scion Xb, then it's much easier. I think an impact wrench would help but I hate to see a room full of tools. It's growing.

I have few ideas for New Year card. And yes, I am not sure if I could get to it but there is always next year. Right? :)

              Happy Friday Kitty.

                Uncle Swedish Baklava,

Thank you. I did not get to Uncle Art's message yet yesterday, or the day before.

You have a Scion and a Volvo 240? Do you have other automobiles you are working on?

If we resided in the same city, I'd be glad to pack up my tools in my giant brown toolbox and the other set in the black nylon bag and come over to help you out. Though my issue is the carpal wrist tunnel and I get inflammation in my hands (ligaments, tendons). That's what I used to do as a paid for mechanic in the vacuum tube days: Tear apart exhausts and suspensions and put them back together, as fast as you can. Nasty dirty. I'd not mind taking off the lug wheel suspension hardware with an impact wrench. I'd use the impact sparingly to re-secure hard. Not ever on wheel lug hardware to feel the proper torque after ensuring the thread was okay on reinstall. I don't have an impact wrench, though. On 240, only need an impact wrench on that 13/16-inch strut piston top nut in the bearing well of the strut mount. Carpal tunnel blows. I think it's psychosomatic carpal tunnel. Hot water or ice can help.

Flushing brake fluid with a power bleeder or ? I need to also on the red wagon and more.

Yep, Happy Holidays and Happy Holiday Seasonings (with the allspice, and ginger, and sage, and savory, and marjoram, cinnamon, and maybe not all together in one dish or recipe!)

                Hope all goes well.

                  Hi Kitty,

I drive a 240. A scion is our family car, not mine but I maintain all of them.

                   photo IMG_1360_zps749cb2c9.jpg
I used a strut removal tool and didn't require use of an impact wrench. It was doable.

Yes, I am using the power bleeder on our family cars including my 240. No problem.

I know you drink beer so now try some seaweed salad. It's good for your blood circulation.

                  Thank you as always.

                    Hiya Uncle Swedish Baklava,

                    Thank you.

Seaweed salad? Is there a brand or store you get this from?

I'm back in St. Loogey, er. uh. I'll be nice ... St. Louis, MO. We have the Trader Joe's and Whole Foods and I dunno where you do.

The premium stores are the Schnucks and Dierbergs and are priced as such.

I don't drink too much ale, though the last few weeks were bit much. My years terrible, corrupt, and wholly evil Spokane saw me being a bit of a boozer. And then I discovered cider at the Total Wine. So, now, boozing is hopefully going to be a weekend-only thing. I mean, boozing for me is two beers and a nap. I'm a very rare lush. I do so now booing the Sleazeattle Seahawks to defeat. Beat the Vikings, did they.

                    Oh well.

So, seaweed salad? I'll check the Google. Yet please lemme know. I need to really lose my duff.

                    Thank you,

                      wakame; edible seaplant 200 1987

                      Hi kitty,

Maybe you can find a Japanese market nearby where you live, go there and ask them for a sampler so you can taste it. Forget the seasoning and cooking. Eat it raw, its good for you, they have been doing that for many years.

Or, you can hit the beach and find some for yourself. I ate some while I was swimming last summer out in Brighton beach, Brooklyn. It taste like gummy bear without sugar.

Off topic, we need to be healthy so that we can enjoy the red brick ride. It's all related in my opinion. :-)

                      Thank you as always.

                        Uncle Swedish Baklava,

Thank you kindly. Yeah, I need to say no to more stuff, er, too much of it, like beer, eggnog, and cheese.

Though Saint Louis Brewery, that makes Schlafly brewed beverages here in the 'Louie, Louie (St. Louis) makes a Grapefruit IPA. Also, the St. Louis Style pizza, well, I have a problem enjoy less of it. Stefanina's Pizza is now the all-time fave St. Louis Style pizza with the provel (usually Hoffman's provel, or a blend). Way better and less pricey and more toppings than Imo's and Cecil Whittaker's Pizza. Just what one needs, more pizza.

I'll find Japanese Grocery stores in St. Louis that sell wakame. IIRC, there is one in the South Grand area. (Maybe more an 'Asian' store, they may call themselves. Many sushi places here, that show up on the Google maps.) I find a place named East East Oriental Market and Cafe in U. City and one in Creve Coeur. I'll check them up.

Thank you. Sorry to be so off-topic.

To be Volvo related again, going to get the third 240 tomorrow some 50 miles away. Figure out a place to park it here. Not much space! No garage, again. Oh well.

Thank you for the wakame insight. I'll get some.

Hope you and yours have some super swell happy holidays!
