87 Rear Caliper Question – What are these things and do I need them? 200 1987

I’m replacing two seized rear calipers on my 87. The old calipers have these things hanging off the back of the calipers by the springs (see picture). The new (reman) calipers have a spot for these things to be attached, but the things aren’t there. Just wondering if anyone has an idea of what their purpose is. Regardless, I’m going to tear them off the old calipers, mostly because they won’t fit in the return boxes as-is.

I'm pretty sure they are there in case the car gets rear ended. They line up with that big sheet metal above the arrow in your picture. Maybe so the rear end doesn't move back?

87 Rear Caliper Question – What are these things and do I need them? 200 1987

volvo4dv8 has it right. Those are part of the controlled crush zones Volvo designed into the later 240 series. Unbolt the panel hanging from the rear frame rail and you'll see it's one heavy piece of steel -- obviously a structural element - there to absorb energy as it tries to push the rear axle forward in a rear end collision. The installer of the rebuilt calipers is expected to switch it over. - Dave

87 Rear Caliper Question – What are these things and do I need them? 200 1987

I thought to add---Although the system is probably worthy, safety wise I have personal experience with a '68 144S that did not have the 240 system. In 1988 a jacked up pickup truck with sewer pipe for a bumper rear ended me while I was waiting to make a left turn. He hit me off center--to the passenger side and typical speed for the spot was 45-50 mph. The back and right side of the car were destroyed but the doors all opened/closed and I drove it a mile to my friend's house. Now there's a left turn lane there well marked to allow safer turns. -- Dave

they were added in 85 or so to the calipers to help minimize harmonics in the brakes-noise control. good luck, chuck.
