Gas Leak Tank Question 444-544

I have a 1960 544 that I am trying to put back to in sound mechanical condition. I filled the tank and noticed a strong gas smell. I think it's leaking fuel around the tank sending unit.

Is the top of the gas tank the floor of the trunk? What protects the sending unit from something being placed in the trunk?

Gas Leak Tank Question 444-544

Originally there was a round cover that covered the sending unit. It was shaped with a rib to mate up with the rib on top of the tank and it would cover the whole indentation that the sending unit sets in. Most always this cover gets lost. The sending unit gasket often gets dry and cracked and will leak. Another place to look at is the small pipe coming out of the tank on the drivers side if yours has one, its common for them to crack where it attaches to the tank. While your at it look at the hoses going to the filler neck. Hope this helps. Larry

Gas Leak Tank Question 444-544

if you need a new one, it is a standard SAE 5 bolt pattern fuel sender gasket. Widely available and common in marine applications. About $4 for a cork version which i believe was the original material.

Thanks Dean. I am a boat guy too. I'll check with my boat parts house.
