Hot 71 142E at VIR with Blue Ridge Chapter of VCOA 140-160

This is the reward for working so hard on the brick.

I went to Virginia International Raceway for the Blue Ridge Chapter of the VCOA Oct 17. On the way my GM alternator crapped out and I returned home to swap it out. I was only 1 hour late.

There was a great skid pad set up to test out the car with. A lot of fun. We ran it wet and dry. The only car beating me was a tricked out 945. The old brick did well. I had not finished tuning my Megasquirt 'puter and was limited to 6000 rpms. I was missing the 7200 redline. It cost me seconds for sure having to downshift.

Then we got to do 15 laps on the road racing course.

We were limited to 55 mph. What happened though we would let the pace car get ahead and 3-4 of us would go tearing through the course to catch up. My car is really set up. My only regret is I did not think to raise my tire pressures. You can actually feel the tire giving when on a tight curve. The 945 and the newer 50 grand cars did not have a thing on me in this situation. I am sure they had more power, but the 142 set up low can really track the course. I was not able to push as fast as she wanted to go in the curves cuz we could not pass. Passing those newer cars on the inside would have been cake.

So once you get your brick up to snuff, go have some fun with your fellow brickheads at your local club meeting.

Check out our club and come meet with us next time. WE DO HAVE FUN! Can't you see yourself behind the wheel in this pic in your car?

Thanks for saving your rare brick for the future. I know how much work it requires, I just hope you are having as much fun as I am.

I think your ride looks fine. Kinda wish I still had a spoiler. My first wife took off my spoiler ;-( IPD has one more blemished spoiler, the last one made from that mold, but I just cant do it.

I just installed that headlight/relay kit you see on eBay from China for $20 with great results on my 142. A great upgrade for cheap, good quality harness put together makes it simple. I also built a similar harness for my running lights too. I used two old FP relays for the light relays. Looks good under the hood.

Blemished spoiler - that would be the least of the issues that we had with the IPD spoiler. The curvature on the spoiler was incorrect (or my 142 came out of the factory incorrect!). We had to saw the spoiler in half, glass it back together with a revised curve and then custom form a top lip to get it to fit the lower valence. Fixing the blemishes was just minor follow up work. Net result, an expensive spoiler. Even though my ride height is only about 1.5" lower than stock, I am still super cautious when approaching driveways.

Joel, I received your pm message to me today--glad to hear from you.
As for a spoiler--here was my low cost (read no cost) solution for a front spoiler. I took the inside plastic cover panel from a Vega hatchback - the one covering the tailight assemblies inside the car - and flipped it backwards (finished side to the rear of the car)and upside down and bolted it to the lower valance of my '69 144S. Vega's will not be so easy to find nowadays but I'm sure there are other cars out there with similar panels. Mine has been on my car for at least 20 years--stands up to the occasional scrape on steep driveways. -- Dave

It is absolutely great to see your car on the track! I've also driven VIR in touring lap fashion--and found the same technique for getting up a little speed (all things being relative of course as I was in my '80 245 M46 and it was loaded with my luggage, tools and photo stuff). VIR is an awesome track--both to drive and for photos.
I am still using the IPD rims you gave me with some hand me down race tires to go along with your old lowering springs on my 144S. Another friend gave me a Volvo Comp 25mm front bar so I dumped the twin stock bars -- still with a 240 rear bar adapted and a couple of years ago built a limited slip rear--with 4.30 gears. It doesn't take much to make a 140 totally fun on the track. I can stay with any car in the esses at Summit Point. I can't do too much about the 3,000 foot front straight however--oh well.
I'll be running it at Summit Point, West Virginia in two weeks-- another awesome road course out in the woods. I am affiliated with the Eastern Motor Racing Association which is running this two day event on Halloween weekend. Any drivers wishing to get a taste of the track is welcome to join us. We do classroom instruction and ride along instructors for first timers. Contact me at fastforwardphoto(AT)yahoo(DOT)com.....Dave

Great to hear from you Dave. In case you missed me.....I'm back!!
I remember trading the rims for the Rallye dash (which I cherish) I recently got a new circuit board for the harness plugs and its all good. I mounted an AFR gauge where the oil pressure gauge went.
With the 4.3 rear end, what rpms were you running? Was the staighaway problem from rev limit or horsepower?
I forgot you got the springs too. I have forgotten a lot of stuff these days.
I thought of you when I was getting around VIR wondering how your 144 was doing.
I am in SC on Halloween WE or I'd offer you an extra hand at the track.
What a kind offer for those just learning racing, wise people should take up your offer to become involved. Weekends at the track are great.
If you are near some time or need help, PM me please.
