New for me...1990 780 Turbo...high radiator pressure. 700 1990

Hello again,

I just bought a 1990 780 Bertone Turbo from a young guy who did
not want to mess with fixing her up.
My main concern I have is that when I reach about 50/60 mph I hear
a whining/rattling/spinning sound from the engine. When this occurs
I immediately get off the gas peddle and then cruse at about 50
so as to avoid the sound. The sound seems to be the turbo kicking in.

This is my first Turbo.

Any Turbo advice is appreciated,

Joseph in the Balloon Capital of the world, New Mexico.

The turbo runs in all gears, not just 4th. When the turbo fails, the noise and smoke is apparent.

I would check the radiator or anything the wind could push back into the fan. Don't forget loose fender liners!

Keeping it running is better than buying new

High pressure in radiator fixed by just tightening up the hoses. Seems as if previous owner left hoses a bit loose. Silly me.

As for the Turbo turbine noise I will check the shaft and report back.
    Thank you.

Take off the hose from the AMM to the turbo. Stick a couple fingers in there, oh, with the engine Off! and try to move the shaft, both side to side and in and out. Yeah it's sexy. But if there's any more than a TINY bit of movement, the turbo bearings may be bad. If so, the impeller may be hitting the housing.
You can rebuild the turbo, or you can change it, used ones/rebuilt ones are available.

This noise could be almost anything, from turbo to a transmission issue. I suspect you'll have to do some noise location first to pinpoint the source and before you start pulling and replacing components. There are some inexpensive acoustic detectors available allowing you to place a sensor on a suspect part and listen through headphones. And if it is a turbo failing, you should be able to hear it in the garage.
