Power Steering Moaning These Days 900 1994

My power steering has started moaning and groaning today. It also actually thumped during a left turn.

The rack and hoses have all been replaced and the system was properly bled, so please don't suggest a system bleed. The system is properly filled and has no leaks.

Is it time for a new/rebuilt P.S. Pump? If so, where can I source a real good pump. The rebuilds at the local parts stores are cheap, spray painted and come from a foreign country.

If it is moaning, it very possibly needs a new pump. As Onkel pointed out, they rarely seem to go bad so I think a used pump is a good suggestion to save you some bucks. For example, my 90 240 had 300k on its original pump when I sold it. Also my 95 850 has 250k on it with its original pump and it's still going. They usually last a long time!

Assuming you haven't already, if it were my car I'd try a PS additive and or replace the PS fluid with the correct synthetic fluid. I swapped out the regular PS fluid in my 95 855 for synthetic ATF almost 5 years ago. That was a good plan. It killed an existing seal leak. The rack, hoses and pump are original with 20 years and 250k on them. I now use synthetic in my engine, tranny and PS in both my cars (the other is a VW Passat). Needless to say I'm sold on synthetic fluid...:)

My pump on my 940 quit at 220,000,same as yours it started moaning. Yes stay away from the parts store pumps,I got mine there and every cold day it groans until the car warms up.IPD list an expensive one,FCP has a lower priced one that looks like my auto parts store one.If you can find a good used one that may be the way to go.

Since I have yet to have a pump fail on a 2/7/9 series I am no help other than to suggest a low mileage used unit (since these seem to rarely fail, I would suspect they are plentiful).

Please satisfy my curiosity, though...how many miles does the car have on it and do you think past neglect (likely from a previous owner) of the system was a contributing factor? If I were to guess, I would think the addition under hood temps from the turbo might be a contributing factor but I have not found them to be THAT much more significant on the 9-series turbo verses NA motor except adjacent the actual turbo.
